Piedmont Hills (9/2)
Hornets  6, Pirates 20

On a beautiful evening and in a most picturesque setting tucked in the foothills of San Jose, the Alameda Hornets lost their nonleague opener to the Piedmont Hills Pirates, 20-6, on September 2nd.

Returning as CCS Division I champions, the Pirates were favored to beat the Hornets by a whopping 36 point margin (according to the Cal Preps website), but a determined Alameda squad battled gamely for most of the evening. And while the halftime score of nada-nada might have felt like a moral victory of sorts, the fact is Alameda was unable to capitalize on favorable field position that had them on the opponent's side of the 50 yard line much of the time.

Jesse Lewis' impressive 61 yard punt helped establish that field position early in the first quarter, and a subsequent fumble recovery by junior defensive end Adham Awa at the Piedmont Hills 48 gave the Hornets their first opportunity to do damage. Unfortunately, the drive stalled at the Pirates' 25 when, on 4th-and-4, senior quarterback Antonio Manibusan's pass fell incomplete.

After a quick Piedmont Hills three-and-out, Alameda once again started a drive in Pirates' territory, this time at the 44 yard line. And behind three Manibusan completions to senior wide receiver Zac Alfers, the Hornets were in business with a 2nd-and-6 inside the ten yard line. But a false start penalty - one of a handful on the night committed by Alameda - was followed by two incompletions and a five yard loss on 4th down. Alameda had been foiled again.

The Hornets' hard-nosed defense rose to the task once more, forcing another three-and-out and a punt to midfield, but Alameda failed to move the football and was forced to punt, as well. This time Piedmont Hills moved the ball into Hornet territory, but that drive came to an abrupt halt when senior defensive lineman Jared Carmon intercepted a tipped pass at the Alameda 36. Interestingly, Carmon had predicted he would intercept a pass in the game and was promptly mobbed by his teammates as he came off the field.

The Hornets, now running a two-minute drill as halftime approached, and behind crisp Manibusan passes to Alfers and sophomore Sulaiman Hameed, moved the ball quickly downfield, but a last-second completion to Hameed came up ten yards short of the end zone.

Halftime Score: Alameda 0, Piedmont Hills 0

The second half began with a scintillating Alfers kickoff return of 40 yards, which once again had Alameda in position at the Pirates' 41. But the Hornets fumbled on their first carry and that balloon was quickly popped.

Piedmont Hills immediately capitalized on the sudden change of fortunes, marching 62 yards in 9 plays and scoring on a 3 yard TD run.

Down 7-0, Hameed countered with a 24 yard kickoff return ending with a head-over-heels flip at Alameda's 40 yard line. The Hornets started moving the football, but in an effort to eke out one last yard on a 15 yard reception, sophomore WR Keelan Doss lost the football, once again ending the drive at the Pirates' 38.

The Pirates took advantage once more, highlighted by a 46 yard completion when Alameda senior DB Nate Rattan maintained perfect coverage on a deep pass, only to inadvertently tip it into the receivers' hands. Two plays later it was 14-0 in favor of Piedmont Hills.

Alameda rallied back, reeling off four first downs on its way into the Pirates' red zone. But on 4th-and-3 at the Piedmont Hills' 17, Manibusan's quarterback draw came up two yards short.

The teams traded punts before the Pirates initiated a 60 yard drive to another score, capped off by a 20 yard TD pass on 4th-and-12. The Hornets continued to fight gamely throughout, but the 20-0 deficit loomed large.

It's always telling when a team fights to the end, and the good news is Alameda did just that. Manibusan engineered an impressive 9 play, 65 yard drive to pay dirt, accounting for every yard by throwing for 46 yards and rushing for 19 and, in the process, setting up the play of the game for Alameda. On 4th-and-3 from the Piedmont Hills 12, the senior QB took the snap and rolled right, only to find a Pirates' defensive end bearing down on him. The defender wrapped up Manibusan in an apparent sack, only to see the quarterback spin 360 degrees to break out of his grasp, at which point Manibusan threw a 25 yard dart to junior Chris Bussey for the score.

Manibusan finished the game going 17 for 27 for 169 yards and the score, while Hameed led Alameda rushers with 38 yards. Alfers ended up with an impressive 12 receptions for 124 yards, while adding 7 tackles on defense. Junior linebacker Jack Rausser led the team with nine tackles, while Awa completed the game with 6 tackles, including two tackles-for-loss, and the first-half fumble recovery. Hameed also had seven tackles. Alameda outgained the victors 251-229 on the night.

Oakland Tribune -
The Hornets' defense kept them in it, but three second-half turnovers were turned into points and Alameda lost its opener on the road in San Jose to the defending Central Coast Section Division I champions.

The game was scoreless at halftime, but Piedmont Hills scored twice in the third quarter and took a 20-0 lead in the fourth quarter. Alameda got on the board with about a minute to go on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Antonio Manibusan to Chris Bussey.

"I felt the defense stepped up and was able to force a couple turnovers," Alameda coach Kemp Moyer said. "We shut them out in the first half, which I don't think they expected. It was definitely more of a dogfight than they expected."

Northgate (9/9)
Hornets  34, Broncos 56

With distant lightning strikes punctuating the evening to the ooo's and awe's of a sold-out Alameda crowd, the Northgate Broncos ran over and through the Alameda Hornets, 56-34, September 9th, dampening the spirits of the opening night festivities at Thompson Field.

The Hornets had hoped to bounce back after a hard-fought loss to Piedmont Hills the week before, but Northgate's old-school Wing-T formation provided a severe matchup problem for the athletic-but-less-stout Alameda defense.

It didn't take long for the Broncos to strike paydirt, as a Hornet fumble on the third play of the game gave Northgate terrific field position at the Alameda 35. Three plays later, it was 7-0, Broncos.

After an Alameda three-and-out, the Hornets benefitted from a Zac Alfers interception and 30 yard return to the Northgate 18. But Alameda false-started at the Broncos' ten yard line and the subsequent sack of senior QB Antonio Manibusan ended the drive in frustration.

A bit dispirited, the Hornets gave up back-to-back scoring drives to Northgate, pushing the score to 21-0 with 9:08 left in the second quarter, but Alameda showed plenty of backbone from there. A 34 yard kickoff return by super-sophomore Sulaiman Hameed got the party started, at which point junior quarterback Jesse Lewis found sophomore WR Keelan Doss coming across the middle to the tune of 34 yards and a first down at the one. Junior RB Adham Awa finished off the final yard for the Hornets first score, although the PAT failed due to a bad snap.

The Hornets continued to battle, and their defense forced fumbles on the next two Broncos possessions, the first recovered by junior defensive end Wes Tolbert at the Northgate 37. Hameed finished off that drive with a scintillating 28 yard run, punctuated by a swan dive into the front right corner of the endzone - igniting both the Hornet sideline and the home crowd - and the next Northgate drive once again came to a halt when DL Nabeel Matin recovered another fumble at midfield. The Hornets were back in business yet again.

Quarterback Lewis wasted no time, executing a perfect screen pass to Hameed, who once again electrified the crowd with a 50 yard scamper to paydirt. What was once a 21-0 game was suddenly 21-18, courtesy of a 5 minute, 34 second flurry of Alameda offense.

But give the Broncos credit. An impressive kickoff return established field position close to midfield, and a clutch 55 yard drive ended with a ten yard touchdown pass as the clock expired to quiet the crowd.

Halftime score: Northgate 28, Alameda 18.

The Hornets came out fired up to begin the second half, and Manibusan recovered a Northgate fumble to thwart a Bronco drive at the Alameda 39. Manibusan then led an 11 play, 61 yard drive to the end zone, highlighted by the quarterback's 29 rushing yards and passes to Doss (22 yards) and Alfers (15 yards) before Hameed finished it off with a 8 yard sweep for the score. Manibusan's two-point conversion made it a ballgame at 28-26, Northgate.

The Hornets then tried an onside kick, which failed, and Northgate's potent rushing offense was in good position at midfield. This launched three consecutive Northgate touchdown drives, first of 50 yards, followed by another 6 play 86 yard drive after a Hameed fumble, then another 60 yard drive, and suddenly the Hornets were looking at a 49-26 deficit. Mixed in there somewhere was a terrific Ernest Gardner 49-yard kickoff return but the Hornets were unable to capitalize on that field position.

The Hornets did continue to battle, mounting a 5 play, 75 yard drive of their own for another score. Manibusan passed for all 75 yards, with the score coming on a beautiful scramble-and-47-yard-dart to a wide open Lewis to draw Alameda back to within 15 at 49-34 with 5:36 remaining.

Alas, the Broncos controlled the ball for much of the remaining time, converting three third downs on the way to a five yard run for the final score of 56-34.

Manibusan finished the game with 125 yards passing and 42 yards rushing, while Lewis chipped in 97 yards passing and the 47 yard TD reception. Hameed rushed for 46 yards and added the 50 yard TD reception. Alfers and Doss combined for another 117 receiving yards on the night.

This week it's another home game, this time against the San Lorenzo Rebels. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Thompson Field. The Hornets are determined to get their first "W" of the season, so the team hopes for yet another enthusiastic crowd. The JV Hornet squad also plays at home, starting at 4:30 p.m.

Jimmy Sharpe scored the game's first touchdown - a 19-yard run - to set the visiting Broncos on their way in this nonleague game at Thompson Field. Overall, Northgate (1-1) amassed nearly 500 rushing yards as the Hornets struggled for an answer the entire game. Sean Han led the Broncos with 205 rushing yards. Eric Haynes added 154 more.

Alameda (0-2) tried its best to make a game of it. After yielding three touchdowns, the hosts came back with three of their own to close to 21-18 with 2:34 left in the first half. An 8-yard scoring run by Sulaiman Hameed and Antonio Manibusan's conversion run that followed brought the Hornets within two points, 28-26, in the third quarter. But Alameda never got any closer.

Manibusan passed for 125 yards and Jesse Lewis for 97 more for Alameda.

San Lorenzo (9/16)
Hornets 45, Rebels 7

Game Clips/Videos:

Anxious to get back on the field after a disappointing loss to Northgate the previous week, the Alameda Hornets came out rippin' and snortin' against the San Lorenzo Rebels on a cool night at Thompson Field, producing capably on both sides of the ball on the way to a 45-7 win.

On just the third play from scrimmage, senior outside linebacker Antonio Manibusan wasted no time in setting the tone for the evening, sacking the Rebel quarterback on a blitz from the right side and forcing a fumble. Junior defensive end Adham Awa picked up the loose ball and high-stepped it 27 yards to paydirt just a minute and a half into the contest. Manibusan's PAT made it 7-0, Alameda.

The Hornets helped the Rebels on their next drive via two 15 yard penalties, one a roughing the punter call that gave San Lorenzo new life at the Alameda 38. But sacks by Manibusan and senior defensive back Zach Alfers shut the Rebel drive down a second time, forcing a punt.

From the Alameda 13 yard line, Manibusan ran for 8 yards on a quarterback keeper, offering a mere appetizer for the main course, which came on the following play. Sophomore Sulaiman Hameed took the second down handoff and ran around left end, juking defenders before cutting back across the field on his way to an impressive 79 yard touchdown scamper. It was Hameed's fourth touchdown of the season.

Once again, the Hornets tightened up the D, highlighted by a notable hit for a six yard loss by Alfers on a hitch pass. The Rebels were forced to punt and the Hornets started their next drive at their own 28 yard line.

Hameed, Manibusan and Alfers alternated carries for 27 yards, at which point Manibusan found a wide-open Alfers over the top of the defensive secondary, good for 46 yards and the TD. Manibusan's extra point made it a 20-0 ballgame just one minute into the second quarter.

After a quick three-and-out, Alameda was in business again at its own 45 yard line, and 2nd QB Jesse Lewis now had a chance to display his own considerable quarterbacking skills. The junior signal caller shook off two major Alameda penalties - one negating a stirring TD catch-and-run by Hameed - on his way to 68 quick passing yards, including a 41 yard TD connection with junior wideout Chris Bussey to make the score 26-0.

Alameda forced two consecutive San Lorenzo punts, sandwiched around an Alameda drive that ended with a fumble deep in Rebel territory, and Manibusan took advantage of the Hornets' favorable field position by rushing for all thirty yards on the subsequent scoring drive. The 14 yard TD jaunt came when Manibusan slightly mishandled the ball on an obvious pass play, only to pull it down and zip untouched into the end zone.

With time ticking down before the half, Hameed once again provided a highlight, intercepting a deep sideline pass based on perfect man coverage. On the very next play, Manibusan found Hameed on a 39 yard pass play, setting up an 18 yard TD strike to end the half, once again to Bussey.

Halftime score: Alameda 38, San Lorenzo 0.

The second half moved swiftly. Manibusan set up the Hornets' final scoring opportunity with his third sack of the night, leading to favorable field position after a Rebel punt. Five plays later Lewis found a crease in the San Lorenzo front seven and darted 20 yards for the score. Manibusan's PAT made the score 45-0.

The Rebels then pulled off by far their best drive of the night: A 15 play, 72 yard drive against a mixture of Alameda first and second team defenders. The one yard San Lorenzo TD run with 4:53 remaining and subsequent extra point made the final score 45-7, Alameda.

Manibusan finished the game with 107 passing yards and 2 TD's, along with 53 rushing yards and another score. His 5 tackles and 3 sacks (including the forced fumble that directly led to the first TD) made the effort even more worthy of note. Hameed finished with 103 yards and a score on just three carries, adding 2 receptions for 42 yards and the interception. Jesse Lewis went 4-for-4 passing for 73 big yards and a TD, while rushing for 50 yards on 2 carries including another touchdown. Chris Bussey caught 3 passes for 63 yards, including his two touchdown receptions.

The defense had an astounding 13 tackles-for-loss in the game. Frank Muzio led the team with 6 tackles, including three-for-loss.

This week: The Island Bowl vs. the Encinal Jets. 7:00 kickoff, at Encinal. Hope to see you there!

Salaiman Hameed rushed for a game-high 101 yards and Antonio Manibussan threw two touchdowns as the host Hornets earned their first victory of the season.

"I was really happy with the way we performed," said Manibussan, who also rushed for a score. "We definitely had a good outing."

In all, 13 different Alameda players touched the ball, highlighting an explosive offensive output for the Hornets (1-2).

After Adham Awa recovered a fumble and scored in the opening minute, Alameda cruised the rest of the way.

Manibussan and fellow quarterback Jesse Lewis combined to connect on 8 of 13 passes for 179 yards in a very efficient effort. The Hornets also rushed for 261 yards.

"I love being a quarterback on this team," Manibussan said. "My teammates make it really easy for me."

Meanwhile, the Alameda defense was stout as well, holding the Rebels (0-3) to just 122 yards.

Keenan Johnson scored the only touchdown for San Lorenzo.

Encinal (9/23) - "The Big Game"
Hornets 41, Jets 45

More video from atop scorer's booth from The Alameda Patch.

It's always a treat to see all of Alameda come out and encircle the local football field as two venerable high school football rivals duke it out for a full 48 minutes. This year's tilt was full of offensive firepower from opening kickoff to final whistle, to the ultimate tune of Encinal's Jets 45, Alameda's Hornets 41, which happened to tie the all-time Island Bowl scoring record (Alameda won a 50-36 contest in 2004).

According to CalPreps.com, the Jets were 35 point favorites heading into the game, in part because they were coming off a narrow loss to a highly-regarded Serra High School squad of San Mateo, 34-28, in overtime. Alameda would no doubt have to play their best game just to stay in the contest.

The Jets received the opening kickoff and showed right away why their offense is formidable, executing a splendid 8 play, 66 yard drive to paydirt. Five different players toted the ball in the process, culminating in Andrew Ve'e's 5 yard TD run just three minutes into the game.

The Hornets started their first drive at their own 41 and moved the ball smartly down to the Encinal 6. But on 2nd-and-five, an Alameda receiver fumbled the ball on an end-around and the drive was foiled.

Alameda's defense steadied itself and forced a three-and-out, leading again to favorable field position for the Hornets. Two plays later, senior quarterback Antonio Manibusan rolled right and found junior wide receiver Andrew Cooper wide open downfield for a 55 yard catch-and-run to the end zone. Manibusan's PAT tied the game at 7.

Two plays later, sophomore safety Sulaiman Hameed recovered an Encinal fumble and the Hornets were right back in business at the Jets' 44. To the delight of the Alameda crowd, Manibusan once again found his target, zipping a 43 yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Zac Alfers to give the Hornets the 14-7 lead.

Alameda forced an Encinal punt and started their next drive deep in their own territory, but a 44 yard pass play (Manibusan to junior Chris Bussey) helped turn field position around, although the drive did end with a punt to the Jets' 22.

The Hornets forced another Encinal punt, but were unable to move the ball after Manibusan was sacked to foil a drive at the Alameda 29. The next minute and a half resulted in two blocked punts for the Jets, the first of which was recovered at the Alameda 1 (setting up a one-yard TD run), the second of which was recovered in the end zone for another score. Suddenly a 14-7 deficit was turned upside down and the Jets led, 21-14.

Encinal did add a 29-yard field goal just before halftime after stopping the Hornets on offense, then driving deep into Alameda territory, although an impressive Alameda goal line stand kept the Jets out of the end zone.

Halftime score: Encinal 24, Alameda 14.

The second half began inauspiciously for the Hornets, as an Encinal squib kick was recovered by the Jets at the Alameda 35. But on 4th-and-3 from the Alameda 17, senior linebacker Jack Rausser shot the gap and nailed the Encinal running back for a three yard loss, keeping hopes alive for the Hornets. Then, after an Alameda punt, junior defensive lineman Jim Ruck recovered another Encinal fumble, putting the Hornets in good field position at the Jets' 39 yard line. Alameda's young squad continued to do whatever it took to keep itself in the game.

One play later, the deficit was cut to three points. Manibusan, under considerable pressure from the Jets' pass rush, stood tall and found sophomore receiver Keelan Doss uncovered on an intermediate route, delivering the pass in stride for a 39 yard score. Once again, the crowd went wild on the Alameda sideline, but, really, the two teams were just getting started offensively.

The next three possessions all resulted in TD's. After a Jets 8 yard score, Manibusan rolled right from the Encinal 28 and saw Alfers double-covered in the front right corner of the end zone. Manibusan threw it anyway, whereupon Alders did an act worthy of Houdini to come down with the ball in the end zone. Again the margin was cut to three, 31-28, in favor of the Jets.

Encinal's next drive resulted in what could only be described as the key touchdown of the game when, on 4th-and goal from the Alameda 25, quarterback Ve's was chased out of the pocket. He gathered himself to throw to the left front corner of the end zone, at which point scatback Bo Banks made a circus catch of his own for the score. What looked like a key Alameda stop instead bumped the lead back to ten points with 9:15 left in the game.

Alameda started moving the football downfield yet again, but after a scintillating catch-and-run by Hameed, his quest to gain a few extra yards resulted in a fumble at the Encinal 30. But an Alameda defensive three-and-out set up a 57 yard touchdown drive for the Hornets, capped by a ten yard Manibusan-to-Hameed forward pitch for the score (and thereby Manibusan's 5th touchdown pass of the evening). Again, the margin was cut to three.

The next Alameda kickoff was inadvertently whiffed, yielding terrific field position to the Jets at the Alameda 39. Three plays later Ve'e ran it in from 5 yards out with just 2:38 on the clock, to the consternation of the Alameda crowd.

Of course, the Hornets never quit. Hameed's 32 yard option pass to Alfers started the next drive, and Alameda converted an epic 3rd-and-37 from their own 47 first with a 20 yard Manibusan dart to Keelan Doss, then with an impressive 29 yarder to Alfers in traffic across-the-middle on 4th-and-17. Manibusan ran it in from the four on the next play, although for the first time all night, his PAT was unsuccessful, making it 45-41 Encinal with just 1:06 remaining in the game.

Another Alameda onside kick attempt failed, and the Jets ran out the clock with four rushing plays.

Manibusan finished his phenomenal night going 23 of 36 for 392 yards, 5 touchdowns and no interceptions. He added 43 yards rushing and another score, not to mention 12 tackles on defense (whoa). Receiver Zac Alfers caught 7 of those passes for 144 yards and 2 TD's, while Keelan Doss added 112 yards on 7 receptions of his own, plus another score. Sulaiman Hameed and Andrew Cooper each scored touchdowns, with Hameed adding ten tackles and a fumble recovery on defense. Jack Rausser, Frank Muzio and Weston Tolbert had 10, 9 and 8 tackles, respectively, with Rausser leading the team with 2 tackles-for-loss. And don't forget Jim Ruck's key fumble recovery.

Great effort, Hornets.

After spending most of the first half looking like a team still smarting from last week's close loss to Serra-San Mateo -- as opposed to a team fired up for its cross-town rival -- the Encinal High football team used special teams to shake off the doldrums and beat Alameda 45-41 in the 57th edition of the Island Bowl.

The Jets (2-1) gave up two big pass plays for touchdowns and weren't sharp offensively, but they blocked punts on consecutive Hornets possessions to take the lead and never look back.

"Our coaches talk about how important special teams are every day," Encinal senior Bo Banks said. "We knew Alameda was gonna come out and play hard, and our special teams stepped it up and we needed it."

The first punt, blocked by Abraham Hill, was recovered by Austin Ve'e and returned 41 yards to the 1-yard line, setting up a Jon Trodder scoring plunge.

The next Hornets drive ended with Alex Amiri blocking a punt and Isaiah Hunter recovering it in the end zone, to give the Jets a 21-14 lead.

Early on it looked like Encinal was ready to roll, scoring on eight plays to start the game as Andrew Ve'e scored from 5 yards out.

But Alameda (1-3) answered with two long touchdown passes by Antonio Manibusan. He found Andrew Cooper for 43 yards and Zac Alfers for 55 yards for a 14-7 lead that lasted most of the first half, until the Jets scored 17 unanswered points in the final four minutes.

Alameda kept it close, using two long

Manibusan scoring passes of 39 and 27 yards to Keelan Doss and Alfers, respectively, making it 31-28, but the Jets drove the last nail in when Banks hauled in a 25-yard strike from Andrew Ve'e on fourth-and-goal early in the fourth.

In the losing effort, Manibusan threw for 376 yards and ran for a touchdown.

The Berkeley High football team's quest for an Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League title began on an impressive note with a 43-0 victory over league foe Alameda at home on Friday night.

The Yellowjackets racked up 340 yards on the ground -- 254 of those yards thanks to the quick feet of quarterback Sir-Devonta Stewart and running back Rudolpho James. The duo rushed for 149 and 105 yards, respectively.

Berkeley (2-3, 1-0 ACCAL) led 21-0 at the half, but the score could have been much closer.

Alameda (1-4, 0-1 ACCAL) failed to convert a fourth-and-goal play from Berkeley's 2-yard line in the second quarter. A pass-interference penalty gave Alameda possession at the Yellowjackets' 36-yard line toward the half's end, but instead of cutting into Berkeley's 14-0 lead, the drive ended with an interception.

James capitalized on the turnover, scoring from 5 yards out for a 21-0 advantage with 35 seconds left before halftime.

Richmond (10/6)
Hornets 49, Oilers 14

Looking to bounce back from a thorough thrashing at the hands of the Berkeley Yellowjackets the week before, a banged-up Alameda Hornets squad took the field for a rare Thursday night game against the ACCAL rival Richmond Oilers. And despite being without stalwarts QB/LB Antonio Manibusan, DE/TE Wes Tolbert, OL/DL Marlas Wilson-Foster, and, for the most part, RB/S Sulaiman Hameed, not to mention stud WR/DB Zac Alfers, who was trying to play through a gimpy ankle, a "Next Man Up" Alameda contingent rallied to win handily anyway, 49-14.

When you're saddled with a 43-0 loss the week before and have to carry that albatross around all week, you're chomping at the bit to get started quickly, and that's exactly what the Hornets did. On the very first play from scrimmage, sophomore safety Hameed made a terrific juggling interception at the Alameda 37 yard line, setting the stage for the Hornets' first score.

And a mere three plays later, it was stand-in junior quarterback Jesse Lewis uncorking a pinpoint 60 yard touchdown pass to sophomore Keelan Doss, much to the delight of the soggy Alameda crowd. Junior kicker Karl Bliven's extra point made it 7-0, Alameda, just 1:04 into the game.

Alameda's next defensive series featured three consecutive tackles-for-loss, forcing a punt, but the Hornets were unable to capitalize. After stymieing another Richmond drive, Alameda was in good shape at the Richmond 37 when the tide turned for a minute.

Alfers, trying to get his feet under him (given the sloppy field) on an end-around, lost control of the football, and an alert Richmond defender plucked the ball out of the air and scooted 61 yards for a game-tying touchdown. To add injury to insult, Hameed, in full pursuit on the play, reinjured his hip flexor and was done for the evening, adding to the Hornets' injury woes.

The Alameda solution? Hunker down, depend more on a developing offensive line, run the ball, control the pigskin. The ensuing 12 play, 65 yard drive featured 11 rushes (including 57 hard-charging yards from junior RB Adham Awa) and just 1 pass, that being the piece de resistance - a beautiful fade pattern from Lewis to junior wideout Chris Bussey for the six yard score. Bliven's kick made it 14-7, Alameda.

The Hornets chose to attempt an onside kick and the move was successful, as sophomore linebacker Jack Ghiglione alertly recovered the kick at midfield. Enter senior running back Jalen Leathers, who immediately broke out an assortment of spin moves and nifty ball-carrying that inspired the Alameda crowd. His four carries accounted for a quick 47 yards, setting up an 8 yard play-action pass from Lewis to junior tight end Andrew Cooper for the score.

The teams traded turnovers, followed by another Alameda defensive three-and-out, at which point QB Lewis began to take over the game yet again. His 28 yard completion to sophomore WR Keelan Doss got the Hornets into Oiler territory, at which point Lewis lofted a spectacular 37 yard dimer to Bussey for the score. Bliven's kick made it 28-7, Alameda.

But Richmond wasn't about to give in. Their subsequent 71 yard drive to paydirt was highlighted by a weaving, tackle-breaking, 56 yard touchdown run with just 1:01 left in the second quarter. Alameda tried to counter by driving 49 yards in the final minute of the half, to no avail.

Halftime score: Alameda 28, Richmond 14.

Alameda fumbled away their first 2nd half possession but the defense effected a three-and-out to get themselves back in business at the Alameda 45. From there, the Hornet running game took control and marched down to the Richmond 17, at which point Lewis found WR Alfers with a 17 yard scoring strike to make the score a more comfortable 34-14. Another three-and-out/punt gave the Hornets possession at the Alameda 48, whereupon the offensive line continued to dominate, yielding yet another scoring drive and a 6 yard TD run by Leathers with 19 ticks remaining in the third quarter, making it 41-14, Hornets.

Alameda stopped Richmond yet again, setting up a final 11 play, 58 yard scoring drive, virtually all on the ground. Frank Muzio finished off the surge with a 2 yard touchdown run, nosing it just into the end zone with 6:19 left on the clock. Chris Bussey handled a bad snap on the PAT and took off, nimbly running into the end zone to make the final score Alameda 49, Richmond 14.

Alameda finished with 541 yards of total offense, including 320 yards rushing at a six yard per carry clip. Adam Awa carried 16 times for 125 yards, while Jalen Leathers added 99 yards and a TD on just 11 carries. The Hornets did lose three fumbles, which everyone agreed will have to be tightened up heading into further league play.

Jesse Lewis went an impressive 10 for 14 for 221 yards and an astounding 5 touchdowns, with nary an interception. Every receiver who caught a pass scored at least once, led by Chris Bussey's 3 receptions for 58 yards and 2 TD's (plus the 2 point conversion). Keelan Doss had 2 catches for 88 yards and a score, while Zac Alfers added 58 receiving yards and another TD. Andrew Cooper caught the other TD for Alameda, while Karl Blivens was 5-for-6 in PAT attempts.

Defensively, junior linebacker Jack Rausser had seven tackles and, extraordinarily, SIX were for a loss. Awa had seven tackles of his own, including three for a loss.

Jesse Lewis threw for five touchdowns, and the host Hornets scored a sloppy Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League win over the Oilers at Thompson Field.

Lewis subbed for normal starter Antonio Manibusan, who missed the game as a precaution after suffering concussion-like symptoms last week.

The Hornets' new quarterback wasted no time, finding Keelan Doss for a 60-yard touchdown to open the scoring for Alameda (2-3, 1-1 ACCAL). Lewis connected with Chris Bussey for scores of 5 and 38 yards and with Andrew Cooper for a 9-yard TD pass before halftime.

Richmond (0-6, 0-2) showed resolve, scoring two touchdowns of its own in the first half.

The first came when Daniel Garcia picked a fumble out of the air and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown. The second came courtesy of Isaiah Brown, the Oilers' do-everything offensive playmaker. Lined up at quarterback, Brown took a direct snap and bolted straight up the middle of the field for a 56-yard touchdown run with just over a minute left in the first half.

The Alameda Hornets are a team trying to move from “moral victory” status to “statement victory” status and that tends to be a process, particularly considering how much youth is served on this team.  Dogged battles against Piedmont Hills and Encinal certainly fell into the moral victory column but the Hornets were hoping for more against perennial power, Pinole Valley.

Alameda got off to an inspired start, as junior Danilo Valle recovered the opening onside kick to get the Hornets in business at their own 43 yard line.  From there, Alameda staged a 5 minute, 13 play drive to the end zone, overcoming four plays that lost yardage (including the first three) and finishing with a one yard touchdown sneak by senior quarterback Antonio Manibusan.  Featured on the drive was an impressive 23 yard run by sophomore Sulaiman Hameed (on 3rd-and-11) and consecutive runs by Hameed and Manibusan which netted 15 tough yards and a first down at the Pinole Valley one.  Sernior kicker Tomas Martinez-Granata’s extra point made it 7-0, Alameda.

But Pinole Valley wasted no time responding, executing a fine 7 play, 71 yard drive to paydirt, tying the score at 7 on a 20 yard scamper with 4:43 left in the first quarter.

Things settled down a bit from there.  Both defenses started to come up big, forcing three consecutive punts, another drive that ended on downs (an Alameda defensive “hold” at their own 27), then two more drives that halted first on a Manibusan interception then on an important fumble recovery at the Alameda five yard line by junior Jim Ruck.

With their backs to the end zone and facing a 3rd-and-7 at their own 8 with less than a minute to go in the half, Manibusan was given enough time by the Hornet offensive line to complete a perfect pass to Hameed on a post pattern.  Hameed did the rest, outrunning everybody and motoring 92 yards for the crowd-pleasing score, fully igniting the Homecoming Crowd.  The Hornets added a pooch kick recovery to the festivities (recovered by senior Frank Muzio), but didn’t have enough time to convert the opportunity into points.

Halftime score: Alameda 14, Pinole Valley 7.

The Hornets had done a good job keeping Pinole’s big play capability in check, but the second half changed all that.  After a booming touchback by Alameda’s Martinez-Granata, and on the first play from scrimmage for the Spartans, a quick pitch off-tackle went for 80 yards and a touchdown, quieting the spirited Thompson Field crowd.  With people still settling into their seats, the game was suddenly tied at 14-all.

Alameda started their next drive at their own 27 and, featuring Manibusan completions to sophomore Keelan Doss and senior Zac Alfers, the Hornets moved the ball smartly to the Pinole Valley 40.  But four five-yard penalties and a sack bogged down the drive, forcing a punt.

The Hornets responded, stopping the Spartans in their tracks with one of Alameda’s biggest hits of the year.  Manibusan, from his linebacking position, nailed the Pinole Valley running back for a five yard loss on a screen pass, effectively ending the Spartans’ drive and forcing a punt.

Unfortunately, Alameda was forced to punt, as well, and the Spartan punt returner took it from there, darting up the middle 65 yards for the score to give Pinole the 21-14 lead.

The teams traded punts yet again, the Spartans’ version rolling dead at the Alameda 2.  The Hornets would have to drive 98 yards to tie the game and, for a while anyway, it certainly looked like that was going to happen.  Manibusan ran for four, then completed a short pass to Alfers.  On third-and-2, Manibusan took off up the middle and gained 38 big yards.  Consecutive completions to Doss and Alfers netted another 28 yards and an Adham Awa 7 yard run had the Hornets in position, 1st-and-10 at the Pinole Valley 22.

Mainibusan dropped back to pass, did his usual scramble to buy time, then uncorked a pass to the right front corner of the end zone to what appeared to be an open Alameda receiver.  But a Spartan defensive back made what was one of the better high school plays this reporter has ever seen – first closing quickly on the ball for the interception, then doing an Ed Reed imitation to dart, power and speed his way 99 yards for a gut-wrenching touchdown the other way.  With just 5:40 remaining, the game had gone from anticipated tie to14 point deficit in mere seconds.

Of course we’ve learned with the Alameda kids that there is no quit in this team, despite the fact players were dropping like flies due to an assortment of bumps, bruises and injuries big and small.  The Hornets kept at it, as, with time ticking down, Manibusan directed another 12 play, 65 yard drive for a touchdown.  Manibusan took it in for the score from the Pinole Valley 18 on a quarterback read-and-scramble, yet that TD came with just 47 seconds left on the clock.  The Hornets had narrowed the deficit to 7.

Three onside kick recoveries by one team in one game?  Not sure we’ve seen that one, either.  Sure enough, junior Justin Hipol gathered in the deflected kick at the Alameda 35 for the Hornets’ third of the night.  Just a flicker of hope remained.

Manibusan did throw three more completions, good for 32 yards -- one to Alfers and two to junior Andrew Cooper, advancing the ball to the Pinole Valley 33.  But a last-second pass to Keelan Doss at the Spartan five yard line fell incomplete, ending the spirited battle.

Manibusan ended his busy night going 15 for 26 for 209 yards and a TD, and added 91 yards on 24 carries with 2 TD’s on the ground.  Hameed added 126 yards of total offense and a TD on just 6 touches, not to mention five tackles on defense, before leaving the game with an injury.  Senior Marlas Wilson-Foster also had five tackles in his first game-action of the year.

It was a gritty performance by a banged-up team, albeit once again of the moral victory variety.  Once again this week Alameda will have a chance to turn the corner, as they take on the El Cerrito Gauchos Friday night under the lights at Thompson Field.

The visiting Spartans ran the ball well in the first half, putting up 166 yards on the ground. But Pinole Valley still trailed 14-7 thanks to two lost fumbles.

The Spartans fixed the mistakes at halftime, ran for 152 more yards in the second half and came back for an Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League win.

"This week we talked about going back to Pinole Valley football," Pinole Valley coach Steve Alameda said. "We wanted to run downhill, be aggressive and control the tempo of the game."

Andre Tyson ran for 220 yards for the Spartans (4-3, 2-1 ACCAL), including an 80-yard touchdown on the first play of the second half that tied the game at 14-14, and his 20-yard first quarter score knotted the game at 7-7.

Pinole Valley continued to use the big play as James Lewis broke the tie with a 68-yard punt return, then Nehemiah Winston gave the Spartans some cushion by intercepting a pass at the goal line and returning it 99 yards for a score.

Alameda (2-5, 1-2 ACCAL) used a big play itself to take a 14-7 lead with just 46 seconds left in the first half as Antonio Manibusan hit Sulaiman Hameed for a 91-yard strike, but a final big play escaped the Hornets as a potential game-tying pass was knocked down as time expired.

Oakland Tribune
By Chris Nguon

Wide receiver Jalen Harvey caught six passes for 55 yards and a score, and cornerback Marcellus Pippins picked off three passes as the Gauchos downed the host Hornets.

In a contest that started slowly for both teams, El Cerrito (5-1-1, 3-0 ACCAL) picked up the pace midway through to remain in sole possession of first place in league play.

"We had a rough time in the beginning but picked it up," said Harvey, who got El Cerrito on the board with a 6-yard score at the end of the first half. "We just have to keep it going."

Just moments into the second half, Alameda (2-6, 1-3) pulled to within 14-6 when Antonio Manibusan plowed his way into the end zone from 5 yards.

From there, however, it was all El Cerrito. The Gauchos picked up a rhythm on the ground (205 rushing yards) and the defense held tough, highlighted by a 68-yard interception return by Pippins to put a cap on a 35-point second half.

A strong defensive performance by the Hornets helped seal a shutout 35-0 road victory over the Dons.

Alameda's (3-6, 2-3 ACCAL) defense was able to hold the De Anza (1-6, 0-4) offense to only 113 combined yards and forcing two interceptions.

The Hornets got things rolling early in the first quarter after defensive back Nate Ruttan nabbed a interception which led to a 21-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jesse Lewis to wide receiver Keelan Doss.

The Dons struggled to gain any consistency offensively as the squad was often stopped while trying to run the ball.

Alameda's rushing attack proved to be solid as well as running back Adham Awa led the team with 114 rushing yards on 17 carries.

Nico Murillo lowered his shoulder for two touchdowns and a what would prove to be a game saving tackle against the Hornets.

"You've got to have heart," the Titans running back said after his last home game. "You've got to have heart in this game."

Murillo led all rushers, carrying for 193 yards on 24 carries, including four runs of 15 yards or more.

"I think he's the best running back in the league," Titans coach Gerald Montgomery said. "(This win) should get us a playoff spot."

Murillo also ran down Hornets running back Antonio Manibusan after a 60-yard run before being caught from behind at the 4 yard line.

Manibusan ran for 168 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns for the Hornets.

But two turnovers each half, including a Titans punt with 1:11 left in the game, that cost the Hornets the win on the road.

GAME REPORTERS Game reporters need to attend their team's games (home & away) and simply report back a day or two afterwards with scores and highlights.  The reports only need to be a few paragraphs long.

We'd like to have more than one reporter per team; that way we'll have back-ups and/or the reporters can choose to alternate games if that's more convenient.

If no one volunteers to report game scores/highlights,
then no game summaries will appear on the website.

If you're interested, contact the webmaster (Jim) for more information.
