Ruckman Elevates Hornets to First Victory
QB Throws for Three TDs in Rout of Richmond
By Don August - Oakland Trib
10/04/2008

Led by sophomore quarterback Tom Ruckman, the Hornets (1-4, 1-0 ACCAL) scored on seven of their 10 possessions to beat the host Oilers.

Ruckman completed 9-of-13 passes for 148 yards and three touchdowns and Alameda's running game amassed 244 yards. Ruckman completed two touchdown passes in the first half, the first going to Drew Keres for six yards and the second going to Qais Shaghasi for 35 yards. In between the touchdown passes, James Powell had a 13-yard touchdown run and place-kicker Edgar Castaneda connected on a 20-yard field goal.

Richmond (0-1, 0-5) has now been shut out in four of its five games this season.

The Hornets first drive of the third quarter was a one-man show featuring Romal Obecena, as he carried the ball all four plays, ending the 47-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run following a Richmond penalty. Obecena ended the game with 106 yards on 11 carries, spitting carries with James Powell. Powell also had 11 carries and gained 82 yards.

For Richmond, Rob Moulder gained 30 yards on 16 carries as the Oilers gained only 48 yards on the ground on 30 carries. Quarterback Desandre Mapp was held without a completion, going 0-for-6 with one interception.

Hornets Lose Lead in Closing Minutes
Another come-from-behind win for El Cerrito
By Matt Smith - Oakland Trib
10/11/2008

The El Cerrito High football team certainly has a flair for the dramatic.

For the second consecutive Friday, the host Gauchos took an Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League game down to the wire, this time beating Alameda with a late touchdown pass, 23-17. It came on the heels of last week's last-minute 17-14 win over Pinole Valley.

Kenneth Green hauled in a 77-yard touchdown pass from Isaac Goins with 4:43 left, erasing a 17-14 deficit. Goins scrambled out of the pocket to his right and just before going out of bounds, floated a ball behind the defense that Green was able to spear.

Once Green reeled it in, he had nothing but green grass ahead of him.

"I juggled it for a minute, and I was able to concentrate and bring it in," Green said. "I just wanted to get into the end zone and lead my team to victory."

The pass appeared to be too high for Green, but he got a hand on it and stayed in bounds after a defender had cut between him and the ball before the pass arrived.

It was Green's second touchdown. The first, a 27-yard catch and run, gave the Gauchos a 14-10 lead near the end of the third quarter. The second made it 20-17.

With under two minutes left Jose Fuentes added some insurance with a 49-yard field goal.

The Gauchos won despite fumbling three punt returns, all of which Alameda recovered deep in El Cerrito territory, leading to 10 points. Romel Obecena scored on a 5-yard run after the third one, giving Alameda a 17-14 lead with 5:38 to play.

"We're a young team that makes some mistakes," El Cerrito coach Kenney Kahn said. "But we're a talented enough team to make up for them."

Green had four grabs for 105 yards as El Cerrito improved to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in ACCAL play. Obecena led Alameda with 91 yards rushing as it fell to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in ACCAL play.

Hornets Win at Homecoming
Alameda Sun
by Eli Nemzer
10/17/2008

The Alameda Hornets sent the homecoming crowd home in high spirits, holding off the winless DeAnza Dons. Alameda's backfield duo of James Powell (140 yards: TD) and Romel Obcena (104 yards; 2 TD's) proved to be too much for the Dons.

DeAnza jumped out to an early lead, as Tom Ruckman's pass was intercepted 40 seconds into the game, and Dons quarterback Greg Vidal found Tommy Phimphvanh with a 46-yard touchdown pass. The Hornets countered with James Powell, who ran for a touchdown on the ensuing drive to tie the score at 7.

Early in the second quarter, DeAnza's Paul Arceneaux recovered a Powell fumble at the 18-yard line, and took it to the house for an 82-yard score. Alameda blocked the extra point, and led a long drive that concluded with Obcena running for a score that put the Hornets ahead by one. Kicker Edgar Casteneda added to the lead, draining a 35-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

Following halftime's homecoming festivities, the Hornets broke open the contest for good. Two minutes into the third quarter, with DeAnza in their own red zone, a miscommunication led to Vidal pitching the ball backwards into his own end zone, but no teammate was there to catch the lateral. Alameda attempted to pick the ball up, but the Dons fell on it for a Hornet safety. Three minutes later, ahead 19-13, Alameda added to the lead, with Ruckman throwing a 12-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Jackson. DeAnza would not quit, as Vidal (12-19 211 yards, 2 TD's) led another Dons scoring drive late in the third quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, Obcena ran for another touchdown to put Alameda ahead, 34-19. DeAnza continued to fight, scoring yet again to keep the Hornets on their toes. The Dons' final threat was put out by Mukhtar Kohistani, who intercepted a Vidal pass in the final moments.

Alameda (2-5; 2-2 ACCAL) faces a tough Berkeley squad next week at Thompson Field.

Yellowjackets Sting Hornets, AHS Team Falls to 2-2
Alameda Sun
October 30, 2008
by Eli Nemzer

The Berkeley Yellowjackets dominated a lopsided game, trouncing the Hornets 52-0. Once again, Alameda was unable to muster any sort of offensive attack, being shut out for the second time in eight games. Turnovers continue to be the Hornets biggest issue, and Berkeley capitalized on three fumbles and one interception to mount a 38-0 half-time lead.

The Hornets began the game on the wrong foot, with James Powell fumbling on the opening drive. Berkeley's Rickey Galvin (9 carries, 142 yards; 2 TDs) began the rout with a 15-yard rushing touchdown. Following an Alameda three and out, Ian Anderson (3-5; 107 yards) connected with Morris Norrise on an  80-yard score.

The Yellowjackets broke away in the second quarter, as the Hornet offense continued to be nonexistent. Berkeley began the quarter on the 10-yard line, and Joseph Tomerlin ran for a touchdown. On the Hornets first play from scrimmage, Tom Ruckman's pass was intercepted by Ronald Floyd who returned it 17 yards for a touchdown. On their next sequence, Alameda, who managed just 15 yards of offense in the entire first half, was once again forced to punt.  Berkeley added on, as John Adams knocked down a field goal. On the final drive of the half, Tomerlin (24 yards; 2 TD's) contributed to Berkeley's ridiculous 289 rushing yards, running for 2 yards to make the score 38-0.

Berkeley continued to light up the scoreboard in the second half, as Galvin ran for a 75-yard touchdown less than one minute into the third quarter. Alameda's long dri ve amounted to nothing, and after a Yellowjacket missed field goal, Edgar Casteneda punted once again to end the quarter.

With Berkeley's backups in the game in the fourth quarter, Reginald Bordenave (13 carries; 84 yards) led the Yellowjackets down the field and eventually scored the game's final touchdown on an 18 yard run. On the ensuing drive, Alameda's Qais Shaghasi reeled in the Hornets only completed pass, a 27-yard gain. However, Alameda's third fumble of the contest allowed Berkeley to run out the clock.

The Yellowjacket's run defense completely shut down the Hornets, as the usually productive duo of James Powell and Romel Obcena combined to run for only 43 yards on 22 carries. In all, Alameda gained just 88 yards of total offense, and completed just one pass.

The Hornets (2-6; 2-2 ACCAL), have scored 10 points or fewer in half of their games. They travel to Pinole Valley on Halloween to face a tough Spartans squad.

Bus Crash Omen for Things to Come
Oakland Tribune
October 31, 2008
by Don August

The host Spartans (5-3, 3-2 ACCAL) scored on their first three possessions and never looked back in the easy win over the Hornets (2-7, 2-3). It was a Halloween night of horrors for the Hornets from the bus ride to the final horn.

The team bus carrying the Hornets to the game had an accident a few blocks from the field, and after walking the rest of the way, Alameda had to contend with Pinole Valley running back Tyrell Smallwood.

Smallwood scored three first-half touchdowns and rushed for 149 yards on 21 carries. His first score of the game came on a 3-yard run. A 31-yard run by Erick McDaniel set up four straight runs by Smallwood for the remaining 21 yards.

On the Spartans' second drive, Smallwood scored from one yard out. Again, a 31-yard run by McDaniel started it off but this time two completions by Derek Crenshaw helped in the drive of 84 yards.

On the third possession, Smallwood scored his third touchdown, this one from 7 yards out. The final touchdown of the first half was a Crenshaw to Jess Mitchell pass of 15 yards. Crenshaw completed 10 of 16 passes in the game for 115 yards and one interception.

Delton Edwards Jr. led the receiving corps for the Spartans, catching four passes for 38 yards.

Hercules (11/7)
Hornets 53, Titans 8

On Senior Night at Thompson Field, the host Hornets scored 14 points in the game's first five minutes to take an early lead they would never relinquish.

Alameda (3-7, 3-3 ACCAL) scored its first touchdown on its opening drive of the game as Romel Obcena scored from six yards out. An ensuing onside kick gave the ball back to the Hornets, which set up Obcena's second score from 13 yards. Touchdowns by Antonio Garcia and James Powell built Alameda's lead to 28-0 at the half. The Hornets limited the Titans to 73 total yards in the first half.

The Titans (2-7, 1-4 ACCAL) scored their lone touchdown of the game on a 17-yard pass from quarterback Michael Montgomery to tight end Kevin Paras.

Obcena rushed for 49 yards, while Kyle Bridges had 37. The Titans' leading rusher was Augustine Vogele with 31 yards.

Alameda Sun, 11-13-2008

On senior night at Thompson Field, James Powell, Romel Obcena and Antonio Garcia left their mark on The Rock, contributing to Alameda's biggest victory of the season. The 53-8 smashing of the Hercules Titans turned out to [be] the highlight of the Hornets' otherwise disappointing season.

Things went Alameda's way from the start on Friday. On the opening drive, Bobby Jackson's 30-yard run set up a Romel Obcena 6-yard touchdown. The Hornets quickly got the ball back, and Obcena scored again, this time from 13 yards out. After both teams were forced to punt, Mukhtar Kohistani intercepted a Titan pass to give Alameda superb field position to end the first quarter.

Tom Ruckman found Antonio Garcia to push Alameda into the red zone. A few moments later, Garcia took a hand-off into the end zone for his first score of the year. Following another Titan turnover, James Powell broke through the defense and scored on a 45-yard run, making the score 28-0. The teams traded three and outs, and even a long punt return by Bobby Jackson could not propel the Hornets into the end zone. Ruckman found James Powell over the middle for a sizable gain, but the buzzer sounded before Alameda got their next play off.

Junior Edgar Casteneda, a bright spot for the Hornets this year as kicker, launched another long ball to begin the second half. The Titans proceeded to fumble deep in their own territory, giving Alameda great field position. Senior lineman Jonathan Yu got a look as fullback, and responded by running up the middle for a touchdown. James Powell made the conversion, and the rout was on for the Hornets.

On their next drive, Hercules scored its sole touchdown: a 17-yard pass from Michael Montgomery to Kevin Paras. Frank Wallace executed the two-point conversion to make the score 36-8. Tom Ruckman led Alameda down the field, finding Peni Mesui for a key first down, and then Garcia deep down the left sideline for a 47-yard score. Garcia played flawlessly, intercepting a Titan pass on the next drive and returning it 35 yards. This set up a 20-yard field goal by Casteneda to end the quarter.

Terry Fernandez concluded the Hornets' dominating performance, running for a score early in the fourth. Kyle Bridges added 37 rushing yards and Powell returned a kickoff 45 yards late to seal the deal for Alameda's overall best contest.

While this year's team struggled from lack of experience, next year's Hornet squad looks to be more seasoned. Several key returning players will be joined by members of an 8-2 JV team.

Mt. Diablo (10/2)
Hornets 7, Red Devils 19

Alameda Freshman played tough against a hard hitting Mt. Diablo squad. On the field the game was closer than the score with both teams demonstrating the ability to move the ball and make some big defensive plays when they had to. Ultimately turnovers and missed tackles were the difference in the game.

Alameda turned the ball over on a fumble on the game's first play from scrimmage upon which Mt. Diablo immediately capitalized with a 44 yard touchdown run. After the ensuing kickoff, Alameda again fumbled the ball away on first down but this time the defense held - Jack Kelly breaking up a pass on 2nd down and Antonio Manibusan and Sam Rauser securing the outside and middle on 3rd and 4rth downs respectively.

Alameda, taking over on downs, ran Nahim Paschal and Chris Maier up the middle for a first down. Mt. Diablo tightened up on the next series forcing Alameda to punt where Mt. Diable took over on its own 30 yard line. Marlas Wilson Foster jarred the fullback coming up the middle on first down causing the ball to come loose where it was recovered by Jose Macias. Alameda failed to capitalize on the turnover, giving the ball up on downs after losing 8 yards on a quarterback sack.

The defense though continued to play tough forcing Mt. Diablo to punt. Marlas Wilson Foster, Huy Ha, Jack Kelly, and Trent Yee all contributed big tackles on this series. Mt. Diablo's punt went out of bounds at the 36 where Alameda took over first and ten.

On first down quarterback Antonio Manibusan picked up a bad snap and headed downfield for a gain of 15. On the next play Nahim Pashal picked up another bad snap and took off for a gain of twelve. A ten yard penalty on the defense and a 22 yard completion from Manibusan to Trent Yee put it first and goal from the 7. A motion penalty negated a touchdown run by Manibusan, but Pashal took it in from the 12 on the next play. Kelly converted the extra point making it 7 - 6 Alameda.

Mt. Diablo scored on its next possession driving 56 yards on 11 plays. It looked like Alameda had them stopped on an incomplete pass on 4rth and 13 but a face guarding penalty kept the drive alive. A couple of other times it looked like Alameda had caught the quarterback for a sack, but let him get away and get downfield for big gains. Mt. Diablo failed to convert the extra point making the score 13 - 7 Mt. Diablo as the first half ended.

Mt. Diable took possession in the 3rd quarter. Sam Rauser and Zubair Mohmand came up with some big defensive hits on the drive, but again, although Alameda was able to pressure the quarterback on key downs, they were unable to bring him down allowing him to get into the open field and keep the drive alive. The result was another Mt .Diablo score -11 plays, 58 yards and consuming most of the 3rd quarter. The extra point was good making the score 19 - 7 Mt. Diablo.

Alameda fought back gamely in the 4th quarter starting from its own 30 and driving to the Mt. Diablo 15 before losing the ball on an interception in the end zone. Pashal was the force behind this drive with runs of 25 and 28 yards. Mt. Diablo took possession at its 20 and drove to the Alameda 31 before turning the ball over on downs. Yee, Mohmad, and Nabeel Martin made big defensive plays on this drive.

Alameda again showed it could move the ball as they drove all the way to the Mt. Diable 16 yard line. Pashal and Manibusan both contributed big runs on this drive along with a completed pass from Manibusan to Kelly. Penalties and a sack, however, backed up Alameda and they eventually gave up the ball on downs. Mt. Diablo took over and ran out the clock to end the game.

Heritage (10/9)
Hornets 7, Patriots 13

Alameda Freshman lost a close game to a very good Heritage team (Brentwood) this past Thursday. Alameda again demonstrated that they can move the ball, but this week also showed a greatly improved ability to tackle. This ability ultimately gave them a chance to win at the end. Unfortunately they came up short, with turnovers again playing a big role in the outcome.

Alameda took possession first at their own 29. Marlas Wilson Foster powered up the middle to the 37 but Alameda was unable to advance further. A 32 yard punt by Trent Yee put it first and ten Heritage on their own 31. After allowing a short gain on first down, Jonathan Mah forced a fumble which was recovered by Rob Finaua for Alameda on the Heritage 30. Alameda quickly capitalized with Nahim Pashal going wide right for 24 yards to the 6 and quarterback Antonio Manibusan taking it the rest of the way on a keeper around left end. Jack Kelly converted making it 7 – 0 Alameda.

Trent Yee kicked off for Alameda and after a 20 yard return it was first and 10 at the Heritage 47. The fired up Alameda defense again came up big with Foster recovering a missed handoff on the Heritage 49. This time, however, Alameda quickly fumbled the ball back on a run off left tackle. After three tough downs Alameda’s defense looked like it had Heritage stopped, but a fake punt on 4th down kept the drive alive at the Alameda 44. From there, Heritage kept on the ground completing a fifteen play drive with a 3 yard touchdown run up the middle. Declan Shener, Jonathan Mah, Yee, and Kelly all contributed strong tackles along the way to slow the drive down. Heritage kicked the extra point – score – Alameda 7 Heritage 7.

Alameda bobbled the ensuing kick-off which was eventually recovered by Heritage putting the Alameda defense back on the field. A twenty yard completion put the ball first and goal at the two. After Alameda stuffed the fullback at the line on first down Heritage punched it on a quarterback sneak. The extra point was wide left making the score Heritage 13 – Alameda 7.

Both defenses stepped up for the remainder of the first half. After Alameda turned the ball over on downs, Heritage went to the air ultimately resulting in an interception by Zach Alfers at the 5 yard line as the first half ended.

Heritage took possession in the second half and went back to the ground game. Alameda’s Sam Rauser and Ryan Cooper contributed tackles to stop potentially big plays, but still Heritage was able to grind out three first downs before being stopped. On a 4th and 14 sweep to the right side, Jose Macias, Foster and Finau gang tackled the halfback in the backfield giving Alameda the ball on its own 33.

Once again, however, Alameda turned the ball over on a fumble and the defense came back onto the field. This time the defense gave nothing. Finau caught the halfback going wide left for a loss of 3 on first down, Yee stuffed a back coming up the middle on second down, Shener and Rauser contained a sweep to the right side on third down, and Yee made a big tackle on a reverse on fourth down to give Alameda the ball back. The Heritage defense was equally stingy forcing Alameda to punt giving Heritage the ball back on its own 35.

Heritage ran aggressively springing its halfback on 2nd down taking it all the way to the Alameda 27 before a touchdown saving tackle by Yee. The fullback drove up the middle to the 16 before Macias and Kelly were able to bring him down at which time the Alameda defense stiffened up. They drove Heritage back the first three downs and Finau threw the QB for a sack on 4rth and 17. This gave Alameda the ball on its own 30 and a chance to win the game.

Alameda went to Pashal for an 18 yard gain followed by a 31 yard pass from Manibusan (under pressure) to Alfers putting the ball on Heritage’s 21 yard line. This set up a what was intended to be a backward pass from Manibusan to wide out Gavin Dacumos who then through a touchdown to Alfers. The officials, however, ruled an illegal pass negating the play.

Pashal kept the drive going with a run to the 9 yard line where Alameda had it first and goal. A no gain up the middle, an incomplete pass, and a QB sack put it 4rth and goal from the 17. Manibusan completed a pass to Pashal who was stopped at the 10 giving Heritage the ball from where they were able to run out the clock.

Piedmont (10/16)
Hornets 54, Highlanders 33

A fired up Alameda squad came out ready to score some points this past Thursday and score points they did. Nahim Pashal scored 5 touchdowns on runs of 82, 69, 34, 4, and 51 yards. Pashel also scored twice on two point conversions contributing a total of 34 points to the effort. For the game Paschel gained 338 yards. Offensive linemen Sam Rausser, Jose Macias and tight end Trent Yee did a great job of opening holes to spring Pashal into the open field where nobody seemed able to touch him.

Other big offensive plays included a 50 yard run on a reverse by Ron Desmond to the 2 yard line setting up a scoring run by quarterback Antonio Manibusan, a double pass from Manibusan to Gavin Ducamos who threw 25 yards to Zach Alfers in the end zone, and a 73 yard punt return for a touchdown by Trent Yee.

Piedmont was also able to move the ball with some strong running backs and big receivers who were able to reach above the coverage. Defensively Sam Rauser had a great game going sideline to sideline from his middle linebacker spot, Trent Yee, Zach Alfers, Jack Kelly and Gavin Dacumas were effective in pass coverage; Nate Ruttan and Jack Kelly intercepted passed and Declan Shener had two sacks. Rob Finau and Marlis Wilson Foster also had some big hits on defense.

The series-by-series for those who missed it:

Alameda received the opening kickoff and was downed at the 18 yard line. On first down Pashel ran through a big hole off right tackle, cut to the outside and outran everyone for an 82 yard score. Alameda went for two - not successful. Score - Alameda 6 - Piedmont 0.

Yee kicked off for Alameda to the 20. Frank Muzio made the tackle at the 26. From there Piedmont started moving the ball eventually scoring on a pass to the left flat from the 1 yard line. They kicked the extra point making the score Piedmont 7 Alameda 6.

Chris Maier received the kick-off for Alameda returning it from the 15 to the 31 where he was knocked out of bounds. Again, on first down Pashel broke free and scored - this time a 69 yard TD run. Again, Alameda went for two and failed to convert. Score: Alameda 12 Piedmont 7.

Yee kicked off, got a good bounce and Piedmont downed the ball in the end zone. Piedmont was unable to move the ball on first and second down with Jonathon Mah and Marlis Wilson Foster contributing big tackles. A quick kick on 3rd down caught Alameda by surprise and the ball was touched by a defensive back and subsequently recovered by Piedmont at their own 47.

The Alameda defense stiffened up here allowing one first down before forcing Piedmont to turn over the ball on downs at the Alameda 48. Trent Yee and Gavin Dukamas both broke up pass plays on this series, Zack Alfers charged in from right corner to nail the half back coming around his side, and Sam Rausser drilled the recipient of a screen pass for a 4 yard loss on 4th down.

On first down, Ronnie Desmond took the ball on a reverse and sprinted 50 yards around the left end before they were finally able to bring him down at the 2. Manibusan scored on a quarterback keeper on the next play. This time Pashal was able to convert for 2 points on a sweep to the right side. Score: Alameda 20 Piedmont 7.

The Alameda kick-off was received at the 30 and returned to the 46. Desmond made the tackle. Again, the Alameda defense held. Robert Finau caught the half back for a 3 yard loss on first down, and after a couple of incomplete passes Alameda took over on downs at the Piedmont 40. Maier went up the middle for 6 yards on first down and then Pashal took it from there with his third touchdown of the day - this one for 36 yards. Pashal - apparently not yet tired - ran up the middle for a successful 2 point conversion. Score : Alameda 28 Piedmont 7.

Piedmont picked up the ensuing kick-off at its 35 where the return man was hit immediately by Huy Ha. They were able to achieve one first down before being forced to punt from their own 41.

Piedmont's punt went out of bounds at the Alameda 27 from where after a ten yard penalty, a ten yard pass from Manibusan to Ha, a 27 run by Pashal, a 12 yard pass to Alfers eventually put it 4rth and 11 at the Piedmont 25. Alameda scored on the next play on a double pass from Manibusan to wide out Dacumos to Alfers. Manibusan passed to Alfers for the conversion. Score - Alameda 36 Piedmont 7. This ended the first half.

Piedmont came alive in the second half returning the opening kickoff to its 45 and scoring 6 plays later on a sweep around left end. Alfers intercepted the 2 point conversion attempt. Score - Alameda 36 - Piedmont 13.

Piedmont attempted an on side kick which was covered by Finau at the Alameda 44. Alameda moved the ball to the Piedmont 25 before turning the ball over on a fumble. Two plays later Nate Ruttan intercepted a Piedmont pass giving Alameda the ball back on Piedmont 49. From there Pashal broke loose to the 4 and then took it in on the next play. The conversion was no good - Score Alameda 42 - Piedmont 13.

Piedmont took over at its 39 after the kick off and went to its own double pass to score on first down. The PAT was good - Score Alameda 42 Piedmont 20.

Alameda gave the ball right back fumbling on the return at the 40 yard line. Eight plays later Piedmont scored on from the nine going around left end. The PAT was good - Score Alameda 42 Piedmont 27.

After an attempted on-site kick and a penalty Alameda went back to Pashal who broke free for a 51 yard touchdown run. Alameda was unsuccessful in its attempt to go for two., Score - Alameda 48 Piedmont 27.

Carlmont (11/1)
Hornets 36, Scots 0

The Alameda freshman came to play stomping Carlmont 36 to 0 in the rain and the mud this past Saturday. Alameda received the opening kick-off and began a drive downfield that included a 17 yard pass for Antonio Manibusan to Zach Alfers coming across the middle and culminated with a beautifully set up screen pass from Manibusan to Nahim Paschel for a 39 yard score. Alameda failed to convert on a QB keeper around the right side. Score: Alameda 6, Carlmont 0.

Alameda got a good bounce to the 10 on Trent Yee's ensuing kick-off where Carlmont picked up the ball and returned it the 30. Frank Muzio made the tackle. Carlmont managed a first down on two sweeps to the left side before the Alameda defense toughened up. Sam Rausser covered the QB after a muffed snap on 1st down, Declan Shenar and Jonathon Mah combined to sack the QB on 2nd down, and Robert Finau corralled a back coming around his end on 3rd down setting up a 4th and long punt situation.

The punt was short and returned by Zach Alfers from the 50 to the Carlmont 15. Huy Ha pounded up the middle to the 10 on 1st down but Alameda was unable to capitalize - turning the ball over on a fumble on the next play. This was quickly remedied after a penalty and QB sack backed Carlmont to their own 1-yard line. Carlmont's pass from deep in the end zone on second down was picked off and returned for a touchdown by Gavin Ducumas. Paschel ran in the two point conversion. Score: Alameda 14, Carlmont 0.

Yee's kickoff was returned to the 30 where again Frank Muzio made the tackle. Declan Shenar continued to pressure the QB forcing a hurried incomplete pass on first down and jarring the ball loose on second down where it was recovered by Marlas Wilson Foster who also got a piece of the QB on the deal. First and ten, Alameda on the Carlmont 28. Paschel took it from there racing around the right side for Alamedas third touchdown of the day. The conversion was no good. Alameda 20, Carlmont 0.

The Alameda defense again held, giving up one first down before getting the ball on downs at their own 40. Sam Rausser, Marlis Wilson Foster, Trent Yee and Jack Kelly all came up with big defense hits on the series. Alameda advanced the ball to the 25 before turning it over on downs before the half ended.

Alameda's second half kicked off was returned to the 50. Jack Kelly recovered a Carlmont fumble on first down and two plays later Paschel broke free for a 38 yard touchdown run. Manibusan passed to Yee for the two point conversion. Score Alameda 28 Carlmont 0.

Carlmont returned the Alameda kickoff from where they achieved a first down before being stopped and turning the ball over on downs at the Alameda 44. Max Walther, Sam Rausser contributed big hits on the series and Yee sacked the QB for a 5 yard loss.

Alameda took over on their 44 and a couple of plays later Paschel broke free again, this time for a 36 yard TD run. Zach Alfers contributed a good downfield block to spring Paschel. Manibusan again threw to Yee for the two points. Final Score: Alameda 33, Carlmont 0.

GAME REPORTERS Game reporters need to attend their team's games (home & away) and simply report back a day or two afterwards with scores and highlights.  The reports only need to be a few paragraphs long.

We'd like to have more than one reporter per team; that way we'll have back-ups and/or the reporters can choose to alternate games if that's more convenient.

If no one volunteers to report game scores/highlights,
then no game summaries will appear on the website.

If you're interested, contact the webmaster (Jim) for more information.
