Congratulations to Andrew Courtland for winning the Singles competition and Nicholas Losande/Ryan Lim for winning the doubles competition. Doubles Finalist are Kyle Johnston/ Jeffrey Li!!!

All 5 players will participate in NCS competition this Friday at Santa Rosa high School. Each year, one league gets a wild card spot for doubles and this year it is ACCAL’s turn. Both the Champion and finalist of doubles qualify for NCS.

Special recognition goes to Mr. Benjamin Goode, who filled a vacant spot in singles for Alameda High. Ben stepped up to the challenge and embraced it, fought through a 3 set match in 85 degree temperatures before succumbing to De Anza. Thanks Ben, your bravery and courage should be an example for us all.

Alameda High also won League. We are undefeated this season. Our first round NCS match will be on Tuesday, 5/11, place and time tbd.

Great Job!!! Good Luck to everyone at NCS.

After a year hiatus, The Alameda Men’s Tennis team participated in the California High School Boys Tennis Classic in Fresno again. With 112 high school teams entering the tournament, the AHS team was slotted to play division 3, out of 8 divisions.  The format was 3 singles and 3 doubles.  The boys played 5 matches in 2 days.

3/5 Friday-Friday started bright and early with our first match starting at 8:30am with last year’s winners, Buchanan High.  They also had home city advantage being based out of Fresno.

1st Match: Alameda 1, Buchanan Score 5

#1 Singles, A. Courtland started off fast winning the first set 6-2, but losing the second with just one break 4-6; physically and mentally exhausted, he loses the tiebreak 3-10. #2 Singles, K. Johnston battles with a shoulder injury, loses 3-6, 3-6. #3 Singles, B. Gee was our lone winner for this match, after losing a tight first set 4-6, rallies back hard to win the second,6-2, then with mental focus wins the tiebreak 10-8. #1 Doubles, R. Lim/J. Li lost in a close one, 3-6, 6-7(5). #2 Doubs, B.Goode/N.Losande lost, 1-6, 2-6 and T.Lee/B.Wong, #3 Doubs, losses at 1-6,3-6.

2nd Match: Alameda 6, Nevada Union Win 0

After losing the first match of the day, the Hornets got refocused and were going to take this one with no mercy.  #1 Singles, Courtland rolls through his match with a score of 6-3, 6-1. #2 Singles, Gee does the same with a convincing score of 6-1, 6-2.  A change up with the #3 Singles, proved to all that Jeff Li can do it all, doubles and singles, with a win of 6-2,4-6,10-3.  New #1 doubles’ team of Lim/Johnston wins with tiebreak in the first set crushing the opponent, 7(2)-6, then finishing it off with a commanding performance of 6-1.  Freshman team of Thon/Justin Lee played #3 doubles, wins at 6-1 first set, then finishes it off with a second set score of 7-5. The seasoned Goode/ Losande team of #2 doubles was the match of the day, losing the first set 7-6, with a tiebreak score of 14-12; then rallied back, winning the second 6-4, and then the tiebreak 10-5.

3/6 Saturday- After one lost and one win yesterday, we were slated for the second group bracket of our division. We were lucky to start the day off a little later, with the first game at 10 am.

1st Match: Alameda  2, East Bakersfield 4

Singles, Courtland, Gee, and Li all had tough matches against this team and none could prevail.  #1 doubles, Johnston/Lim proved to us again their physical and mental abilities on court winning, 6-1, 7(4)-6. #2 doubles, Goode/ Losande lost the first set 1-6, rallied back on the second but were just short, 4-6. Freshman #3 doubles team T.Lee/J.Wan, loses the first set 3-6, but steamrolls the second 6-1, then wins the tiebreak 12-10.

2nd Match: Alameda 4, Bullard 2

The Singles lineup came out fiercely after all losing the prior match. #1 Singles, A. Courtland knocks out his opponent, 6-3, 6-3. #2 Singles, B. Gee dominates his opponent, 6-3, 6-1.  #3 Singles, J. Li won by a forfeit from his opponent. #1 doubles, K. Johnston and R. Lim’s opponents played #1singles and #1 doubles in the opponent’s prior match with another team.   Johnston/Lim walked on the courts knowing this was going to be a battle but ensured that the last men standing would be them, with a score of 6-1, 4-6, 11-9.   #2 doubles, Goode/Losande lost in a close one, 3-6, 3-6. #3 Doubs, T.Lee/B.Wong also lost but not before they take the game to a tiebreak, 1-6, 6-4,8-10.

3rd Match: Alameda 3, Stockdale 3

#1 Singles, A. Courtland defeats his opponent, 6-1, 6-4. #2 Singles, J. Li loses in a close one, 7-5, 6-3 and a new player at #3 Singles, B. Goode loses 6-1,6-2. The teams of #1 doubles, K. Johnston/R. Lim and #2 doubles, B. Gee/ N. Losandes wins in tie break matches. K. Johnston. R.Lim 5-7, 6-4, 10-3 and B. Gee/ N. Losande 4-6,6-4,10-5.  #3 doubles, freshmen team of J. Lee/ K. Thon was just a little short, losing, 6-2, 1-6, 10-7.

Results- Although we were tied in matches with another team for second place in our bracket, we lost to them by one set and finished 3rd place.

Thanks to the following parents:  Teon’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee and Nick’s dad, Mr. Losande for chaperoning team members and driving to Fresno. Without them, we could not have taken all the players that participated.  Ryan’s father, Mr. Lim, volunteered to drive also but was injured a couples of day prior to the trip during a tennis match. We send our get well wishes to him. Thanks to Mrs. Losande for assisting us with the hotel arrangements and Sarah Courtland for being our team photographer.

The Fresno tournament was proven to be invaluable experience to all the players and I.  It was terrific to see the boys rally back from lose and refocus their energies to another match.  Playing 5 matches in 2 days was an incredible feat for the boys and I commend them.  Great Job!!!! We are off to a wonderful season. GO HORNETS!!!!
