Wildcats end season with playoff game at home
By Joe Langstaff
The Daily Journal, 05/26/2009

Sometimes the term "big game" is a little overused. However, Wednesday's NCS Division II playoff softball game between the Ukiah High Wildcats and the Alameda High Hornets was, indeed, a big game. Not only did it feature a game matching two quality softball teams, but, according to Ukiah Coach Gary Venturi, it was the first home playoff game for a Ukiah High softball team in fourteen years. That alone qualified it as a special event. The combination of the two attracted the largest crowd of the year for a Ukiah home softball game, with estimates ranging well over a hundred in attendance and quite possibly closer to 150-160. Fitting to the occasion, there was a public address announcer who greeted the gathering, introduced each team and the coaches, announced the batters as they came to the plate and gave the score between and at the end of innings. In addition, the Max Harper Band was on hand to provide pregame and between innings musical entertainment and Ukiah senior Brooke Ingram sang a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem before the start of the game. The game itself lived up to its billing. A scoreless tie for five innings behind top-notch pitching and tight defense, each team scored in only one inning. The Hornets scored first in the sixth, with three runners crossing the plate. The Wildcats rallied back in the seventh, scoring one run and bringing the tying run to the plate before the side was retired. With the 3-1 victory the Hornets moved on to face Pinole Valley High today in Pinole.

Each team went three-up-three-down in the first inning. Wildcats starting pitcher, Hillary Ruddick, retired the side on two strikeouts called and a comebacker. Hornet starter Sarah Sedlack retired the first batter in the bottom of the inning on a shallow fly to center and then struck out the next two batters swinging.

Sedlack got the game's first hit, leading off the top of the second and grounding a ball past third. Good hustle by left fielder Kerri Donnelly, who got to ball quickly and got it back to the infield, held Sedlack to just a single. Sedlack attempted a steal of second, but was gunned down on a strong through by catcher Adriana Torres, with the tag applied by shortstop Kara Kvasnicka. The next batter, catcher Rachel Rodriguez, drove a single over short to once again put a runner on first. She was erased when the next batter hit into a 6-4 force. Ruddick struck out the following batter to retire the side.

Kvasnicka leadoff the bottom of the inning with Ukiah's first hit, a single over first. She was forced at second on an attempted 6-4-3 double play. The relay throw to first was thrown out of play, allowing the batter to take second. Sedlack allowed the runner to go no father, striking out the next batter and getting the fourth batter of the inning to hit a comebacker to retire the side.

The Hornets were retired in order in the top of the third, two batters on a strikeouts and the other on a good defensive play by first baseman Beth Williams who knocked down a well-hit grounder on the line and stepped on the bag for an out. Ukiah also went down in order in the bottom of the inning with Ruddick making the third out on a laser line drive hit right to the left fielder.

Two more fine defensive plays plus another strike out retired the Hornets in order in the fourth. Williams, at first, went up to get a high throw on a grounder, and came down on the bag for the out. Kvasnicka made a similar play at short, leaping to snare a line drive off the bat of Sedlack. A two-out error followed by a single to left by right fielder Riann Bumpus put two Wildcat runners on base in the bottom of the inning. DH Jovan Conchola, showing good hitting fundamental, went with the pitch, hitting a sharp ground ball to the right side. Unfortunately, the ball went directly to the second baseman who threw to first to retire the side.

Left fielder Drew Jones led off the top of the fifth with a ground single up the middle. She immediately stole second to put a runner in scoring position with no outs. Up to the challenge, Ruddick proceeded to strike out the next three batters in a row, featuring a devastated riser.

The Wildcats came close to breaking the scoreless tie in the bottom of the inning. With one out, third baseman TaSheena Kirby grounded a single over second. Center fielder Melissa Reyes laid down a great down the first base line, advancing Kirby to second. Kortney Martinson entered the game as a pinch runner for Kirby. The next batter, Ruddick, drove a single through the hole between the first baseman and the second baseman. Right fielder Megan McGrath got to the ball quickly and fired home. The throw was there in time for the catcher to put the tag on the runner for the third out.

The Hornets finally broke the scoring drought in the top of the sixth. The leadoff batter, center fielder Megan Avanti, hit a high chop over third. Kvasnicka gloved the ball on edge of the infield grass but hand no play. Avanti then stole second. What followed was probably the pivotal play of the game. Shortstop Gina Morton lofted a shallow pop fly down the left field line that fell no more than a foot fair just out of reach of the pursuing fielders. Avanti scored on the play with Morton taking second on the throw home. Second baseman Stephanie Sorensen followed with a double to the fence in left scoring Morton. A single to right and a walk loaded the bases with no outs and two runs in.

Alameda was in a position to all but lock up the game with a really big inning. But the Wildcats showed determination and no little amount of grit, limiting the scoring to just one more run in the inning. A grounder to short produced a force at home for the first out. A single to right scored the third run of the inning, but the runner from second was thrown out at the plate for the second out. A strikeout produced the third out. The Hornets had been denied a monster inning, but they still came away with a 3-0 lead going to the bottom of the sixth.

The Wildcats had the makings of another rally in the bottom of the inning when Donnelly beat out an infield hit to lead off. With two outs and Donnelly still at first, Bumpus grounded a single up the middle to put the tying runs on first and second, with the lead run coming to the plate. The key play for Hornets in the top of the inning had been a soft pop fly that had found a safe place to land among the fielders. Quite often in this game, it's not how hard you hit the ball, it's where you hit it. Such was the case for the Wildcats in this inning. Conchola, who had hit a sharp grounder that found an infielder in the fourth inning in a similar situation, this time smoked a liner that rocketed right to the second baseman to retire the side.

The Hornets were retired in order in the top of seventh, leaving the score at 3-0 going to the bottom of the inning. Immediately, the Wildcats got another rally going. Second baseman Halley Todd grounded a ball past the mound where it was fielded by the shortstop who threw to first too late to get Todd. With Todd at first the Hornet catcher attempted to pick her off. But the throw sailed past first and down the right field line by the right fielder. Todd got up and made it all the way to third. A grounder to second scored Todd from third with Wildcats first run of the game. Sedlack made a nice play on an attempted bunt for a hit by Reyes to record the second out. Fittingly, Sedlack had to face her counterpart, Ruddick, to try to get the final out of the inning and the game, each team's best player going head-to-head. Ruddick won this battle, lining a single over second to extend the inning and bring the tying run to the plate. But Sedlack got the next batter to ground third to retired the side and bring a end to a well-played and entertaining NCS playoff game. Both teams proved themselves worthy of being selected to the postseason.

Coach Venturi noted after the game that his team "put the ball in play and had opportunities (to score), but hit some balls right at their fielders." Unofficial game statistics showed the two teams tied with hits at eight each. Alameda was able to bunch five of their hits in the sixth inning. Ukiah had two hits in each of the last three innings. Sedlack had the only multi-hit game for the Hornets with two singles. Bumpus and Ruddick each had two hits for the Wildcats. Ruddick hand nine strikeouts, while Sedlak had five.

Coach Venturi said that while he "would have liked to have won the game and kept on playing in playoffs," his team still had a great season, finishing with an overall record of 18-8 and a third-place finish in the NBL. He was very proud them and pleased that they had the opportunity to play a home playoff game in front of their families, friends and fans.

It was Senior Day for the Lady Hornets as they took on the Yellowjackets in the last league game of the season. The hornets needed a win to improve their chances of receiving an NCS bid and they handed the ball to their senior pitcher Sarah Sedlack who has been the horse all year. Previously this season the Hornets lost to Berkeley 4-3 in a tough game at Berkeley. With Coach McCarthy laying it out pre-game the young Hornets knew what they had to do. Sedlack started the first inning three up three down and the Hornets didn't do much better in their half. Sedlack put the Yellowjackets down in order in the second. Rachel Rodriguez worked the Berkeley pitcher for a walk and was promptly sacrificed to second by Drew Jones on a nice bunt. Megan McGrath singled but not deep enough to score Rodriguez from second. In the previous Berkeley game the Hornets left many runners on base needing that one timely hit that never came. That wasn't the case today...freshman Michelle Popelka singled in Rodriguez to give the Hornets the lead 1-0. Sedlack kept her part of the deal facing the minimum through four innings. Bottom of the third Stephanie Sorensen blasted a ball over the center fielder's head and one bounced the wall putting her at second with a double, but that's as far as she got.

Top of the fifth the Yellowjackets got runners to first and third with two out but Sarah came back to strike out the final batter to end the rally. In the bottom of the fifth inning Megan Averitt lined a ball to right field. The right fielder committed the outfielder sin of taking the first step in as she watched Megan's ball sail over her head. Megan crossed the plate before the ball made it to the cut-off for an easy home run giving the Hornets a small but welcome cushion 2-0. Berkeley never quits though and in the 6th inning they again got two runners on but the door was slammed once again by the Hornet's sparkling defense, a defense that made no errors on the day. Bottom of the 6th had some Hornet excitement as freshman Drew Jones lined a ball over the left fielder for a nice triple with one out but Berkeley's defense stiffened and she was stranded.

A truly uneventful and welcome top of the seventh produced Sedlack's fifth 3 up, 3 down inning of the day giving the Lady Hornets a solid victory over a good league rival and making Senior Day a great one. The Alameda squad played its arguably best overall game of the season, getting great pitching, superb defense and timely hitting. '

You deserve to get an NCS bid! Good Luck ladies!

@ Livermore Stampede
April 16-18

Game 1 - Thursday April 16
Castro Valley 7 - Alameda 0

The Hornets ran into a Castro Valley team looking to avenge an early season loss. The Trojans, looking much improved since the earlier meeting, with help from a shaky Alameda defense sent the Hornets home with a 7-0 loss with few, if any, highlights.

Game 2 - Friday April 17
College Park 7 - Alameda 6

The Alameda girls jumped out to an early first inning lead 3-0 on singles by Megan Averitt, Sarah Sedlack, Drew Jones and a double by Stephanie Sorensen. Unfortunately, the Hornet defense had a lapse and allowed College Park back in the game with 7 runs in the next two innings, only 3 earned. The Hornets mounted a comeback in the last inning but fell a run short when Sarah Sedlack and Rachael Rodriguez started the inning with singles and were driven in by Drew Jones long triple to left. Drew scored the last Hornet run of the game leaving the Alameda girls one short.

Game 3 - Friday April 17
Livermore 13 - Alameda 1

Nothing good happened in this game.

Game 4 - Saturday April 18
Amador Valley 2 - Alameda 4

Bumped to the loser's bracket the Hornets showed up Saturday morning with a little attitude even though they were playing for a hopeful best 13th place tournament finish.

Fortunes began to turn for the girls in this game when Alameda jumped on Amador Valley in the first inning scoring 3 runs on hits by Sarah Sedlack, Rachael Rodriguez and Drew Jones. Alameda added another run in the second when Megan Averitt singled and was driven in by Stephanie Sorensen's single. Sarah Sedlack, who pitched most of the Hornets innings, scattered seven hits, issued no walks and struck out 2. Gia Morten played excellent defense at short and made a spectacular play throwing out a runner at first from the hole on a deflected ball.

Game 5 - Saturday April 18
Clayton Valley 4 - Alameda 5

Alameda was still smarting from an early season extra inning loss to Clayton Valley, a team with intimidating speed and hitting. It looked like a replay of the earlier contest with Clayton Valley taking a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. With the 90 minute tournament time limit expiring as the Hornets came to bat, they knew this was their last chance to mount a comeback. Things didn't look good when the first two batters flew out to center field and second base respectively. But Megan McGrath kept the inning alive with a single; and when Megan Averitt took one for the team in the right thigh things started looking up (Thanks Meg!). Gia Morten singled to load the bases. Senior Stephanie Sorensen came to the plate and dramatically singled sharply up the middle. Megan McGrath scored and when Megan Averitt's hand slid across the plate in her head first slide, just beating the throw, the comeback was complete.

March 20

Alameda 0001011- 3  6 1
Logan   1010002- 4 10 2

Logan edged Alameda Friday night in the freezing comfort of the Colts home field, again (Logan has never agreed to travel to Alameda). Logan, taking advantage of a local league rule, in a non-league game, chose to start the game in the bottom of the first inning wiping out a top of the inning played in a deluge just a couple of week before. In the rainout game the Hornets were held scoreless as they had to bat with one hand holding an umbrella.

In a game with a mysterious strike zone the Hornets trailed until the top of the fifth inning. Stephanie Sorensen lead off with a single and scored on a RBI fielder's choice by Drew Jones tying the game at 2. Alameda took the lead in the top of the seventh; Alicia Fong scored, after a leadoff single, when Sorensen's hard grounder was misplayed by the shortstop. Leading 3-2 Alameda watched the first three batters in the bottom of the inning single to load the bases. The tying run scored on a payback misplay and the next batter walked on four strikes to score the winner.

March 18

Alameda (3-2)        12001000 4  8 5
Clayton Valley (3-0) 22000001 5 11 0

Clayton Valley hosted the Hornets in 78 degree weather. Alameda started off with a single by Megan Averitt and an RBI double from Stephanie Sorensen. The Eagles answered in the bottom with two runs of their own. In the second Alameda kept up the offense with singles by Anna Varghese and Michelle Popelka, capped by an RBI triple off the right field fence by Averitt. Alameda tied the game at four in the top of the fifth inning on a hard single up the middle by Sorensen, scoring Averitt who had walked earlier. The sixth and seventh were scoreless, with Sedlack pitching out of a tough bases loaded jam in the 6th. The Hornets started the top of the 8th with a runner placed at second base (International Tie Breaker Rule) but were unable to move her around. The Eagles had better luck with their runner when Larisa Jones lined a ball to center scoring Kelly Bortland for the game winner.

The Hornets helped the Clayton Valley squad on the day contributing 5 errors that led to 3 Eagle runs, however Averitt made several nice running catches in center field that helped keep the game close.

The Hornets travel to Union City for a 6:00 game vs. Logan who is ranked 4th in the most recent East Bay softball poll. Prior to this game the Hornets were ranked T15.

March 11

The Hornets faced one of their local rivals and played them tough as always. Alameda took an early lead in the first when Rachael Rodriguez singled in Stephanie Sorensen who had singled earlier. The game was tied in the second when the Trojans scored on a couple of hits and a Hornet miscue. Although they hit he ball hard all day Alameda let a lot of opportunities go by as they left the bases loaded without scoring in the second and third innings, leaving 13 total stranded for the game. Castro Valley took a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning and the top of the sixth things started to turn for the Hornets. Stephanie Sorensen lined a single to left and came around to score on a smoked double by Rachael Rodriguez. Freshman Gia Morten came to the plate and on an 0-1 pitch singled in Rodriguez with what proved to be the winning run. Sarah Sedlack, who pitched another great game, set the Trojans down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to seal the victory. Sedlack scattered 7 hits while walking no one.

The Hornets shook off the rust created by the recent storms and played a tough Puma squad, out of Santa Rosa. In a well pitched game by both hurlers, Sarah Sedlack spaced out four hits, walked one and struck out 7 in her second start of the young season. The girls played tough defense with catcher Rachel Rodriquez gunning out two Puma baserunners. Megan Averitt sparked the team from her leadoff position going 3/4 on the day. Michelle Popelka and Sarah Sedlack each contributed two hits a piece. Stephanie Sorensen had a double and RBI. Drew Jones also contributed a two-bagger. Alameda sent 30 batters to the plate in the game with no batter retired via the strikeout.

The Hornets took a 1-0 lead into the top of the sixth inning but allowed the Pumas to tie the game on three singles. Maria Carrillo had a quiet top of the seventh but in the bottom, leadoff batter Megan Averitt smoked a long fly ball over the right fielder's head and when the dust settled Megan stood on third base. Popelka grounded out but Stephanie Sorensen sliced a drive down the right field line. The right fielder made a nice shoestring catch but the ball was plenty deep to score the speedy Averitt with the game winner.
