vs. El Cerrito
Hornets 16,
Gauchos 1
The Hornets finished the season on a happy note, squeaking out a narrow win over the Lady Gauchos. The Hornets bats were kept relatively quiet in the first inning, managing only 3 runs on back to back triples by Hannah Johnson and Stephanie Owyang, and an RBI single by Emily Cooper. The Hornets pushed another 8 runs across in the second on singles by Aamira Dastgir, Sahar Adina, Alexis Konstantino, Hannah Johnson, and Sydney Lewis. The mercy rule came into play as the first 6 batters reached base in the bottom of the third, resulting in 5 runs. After Stephanie Owyang belted her second triple, Sydney Lewis, Emily Cooper, Sophia Macias, and Aamira Dastgir all smacked solid hits, as the umpire invoked the 15-run rule and raced home, jumping into his car before the Hornets chanted "Thank You Blue". Emily Cooper gave up only one hit in her three innings of pitching, striking out 5 Lady Gauchos.
vs. Pinole
Hornets 1, Spartans
10
The Hornets played a game that was much tighter and more entertaining than the final score might indicate. Alexis Konstantino was unhittable during the first 3 innings, throwing no-hit ball while striking out 4. She also had the game's only hit to that point, a bunt single. The Spartans strung together 3 hits and a sacrifice bunt to draw first blood and take a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. The Hornets tied the game on hits by Hannah Johnson and Stephanie Owyang in the bottom of the fourth. Playing through a steady drizzle in the top of the fifth, the Spartans put 3 runs across to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Hornets threatened in their half with a single by Sahar Adina and a double by Alexis Konstantino, but a line shot to shortstop turned into a double play to kill the Hornet rally. The Spartans added 4 more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
In spite of the score, the Hornets managed numerous fielding gems. Catcher Sydney Lewis put on a show, throwing out two would-be Spartan base stealers at second base. Sophia Macias snagged a line drive at first base and alertly doubled a runner off second. Hannah Johnson made a shoestring catch of a line drive at third base, and Stephanie Owyang ended an inning with a running catch of a sinking pop fly in shallow right field.
This game also produced two unusual plays that are rarely seen, much less twice in one game. Both of the Pinole Valley third and fourth innings ended on nearly identical ground balls to shortstop, with a runner on second. In both cases, the runner inexplicably collided with the shortstop trying to field the ball, for a case of interference and automatic outs.
vs. Berkeley
Hornets 0, Yellowjackets
10
Sloppy fielding by the Hornets in the first inning cost them dearly, as 3 errors led to an insurmountable 6-0 lead. Emily Cooper did a good job of shutting down the Yellowjackets the rest of the way, but she couldn't escape more fielding woes, as Berkeley managed two more unearned runs in the fifth. It was all academic on this day, as the Hornets bats were kept silent, as Berkeley's ace was throwing a no- hitter. Only two Hornets reached base, one on an error, one on a base on balls. On defense, Malia Obello made the play of the game with a nice running catch in right field.
vs. James
Logan
Hornets 1, Logan
12
The Hornets faced a tough opponent on the road and couldn't put enough offense together to keep up with the big school girls. The sole Hornets run came on a Sydney Lewis triple to deep left field. The Hornets stayed within striking distance until Logan finally sealed the game with a 5 run sixth inning.
vs. De Anza
Hornets 16,
Dons 0
This game was not nearly as close as the final score indicated, as the Hornets jumped to a 10-0 first inning lead and tried to avoid running up the score from there. The game ended on the mercy rule after the visitors batted in the third inning Emily Cooper pitched a perfect game for the Hornets, striking out 7 of the 9 batters she faced. The other two batters were retired on weak ground balls back to the pitcher and first base.
vs. Pinole
Hornets 4, Spartans
6
The Hornets jumped to an early lead against the top team in the league with a 3 run second inning, stringing together 4 hits. The Spartans came back in the 3rd with 4 runs to take the lead, topping their rally off with a long home run. The Hornets rallied to tie the score in the top of the sixth, but the Spartans came back with two in the bottom of the sixth to seal the game. Emily Cooper pitched an impressive 6 inning complete game, giving up 7 hits and striking out 5. Sophia Macias went 3 for 3 with 2 singles and a double. Florence Yuen had a triple and 2 RBIs. Sahar Adina and Alexis Konstantino each had a hit and RBI, while Hannah Johnson and Sydney Lewis also each collected hits. Aamirah Dastgir and Stephanie Owyang each made superb catches in the outfield to slow down the potent Spartans offense.
