@ State Championships
At Fresno
November 28

Congratulations Hornets!!!

At the CIF State Championships in Fresno, in a field of nearly 200 runners, here are your ACCAL Champion Hornet results:

Race video (and official results) here.

What a season! Charlie, Zach and Hector made the all-time Hornets list for the State meet course at Woodward Park in Fresno. We may have had a little NCS hangover having spent so much effort to make State meet, but the boys all performed very well.

All season long, Charlie Perkins has led this team placing 22nd overall in Division II statewide with a great time of 15:43 to become the all-time best XC runner Alameda has ever produced. He now holds the record at every invitational we competed in this season; starting with the Farmer, Ram, Artichoke, Mt. SAC, NCS Hayward and now the State meet course, at Woodward Park, in Fresno. Next is Zachary Perkins, despite a slight injury from his exceptional performance at NCS, he still ran a great time of 16:35 and making the all-time list. Next is Hector Lopez-Garcia, holding down the 3rd spot all-season long. He knocked off 4 seconds of his previous time on this course with a respectable time of 17:12. Brandon Sepp who has held the 4th spot all season continues to impress in only his second season, finishing with a time of 17:41. He is followed by Will Colvin improving on his time from earlier this year with a time of 18:03. Next up, Tyler Parsons with a very respectable time of 18:41. He will continue to improve next season. Finally, Taylor Hadidian, who has been my 5th man all season, despite not feeling very well managed to finish with a time of 18:58. TJ flew all day Friday from the East coast and then drove from Alameda to Fresno, arriving nearly at 11:00 p.m.

Thanks guys! There is no coach prouder of a group of young men than myself. You sacrificed so much for the last six months to earn the opportunity to be one of only 23 teams in Division II in the entire state of California. I hope you will always remember this time you had together.

WOMEN

The AHS girls ran well in their final race of the season coming in at tenth place in the team competition for the North Coast Sectional championships. Kelly Hosokawa led the team again and made it onto the all-time list at Hayward with a time of 21:06 finishing 48th out of 104 runners but tied for the 6th best freshman in the race, Irene Xu ran a strong race to also make it onto the all-time list at 21:24 in 56th---our best time last year was 21:45. The lone senior running on Saturday was Gina Salerno who improved her time from last year by 11 seconds in a time of 21:58 for 61st place, Lindsi Tu ran hard and improved her time from last year by 14 seconds running 22:24 in 68th place and she brought Emma Fraser along for a great last race at 22:25 in 70th place. Jessica Burns who was unable to run the race last year ran 23:02 on her achy knee for 81st place and Naomi Chan finished 88th at 23:28 as she was called upon to run when Stephanie stepped down. Naomi and Julia Fanger stayed with the team the last two weeks as alternates and both worked hard and were so supportive of their sister runners. Stephanie's hamstring muscle is still aching and despite truly wanting to run she chose to do what was best for the team thereby letting Naomi share in the team 's running efforts. We had 3 freshies and 3 sophomores run this race---so we have high hopes for the next few years.

Congratulations to the boy's team---on their way to Fresno for next Saturday's State Championships---The team was well and truly coached by Nino, who kept them focused all season on this goal. In the race the Perkins twins were superb finishing 4th and 5th, while senior Hector did well in his first and last cross-country season in 14th place, but it is my opinion that Brandon Sepp ran his best race ever, finishing 19th and assuring the Hornets of their opportunity to run at State.

We all had a great season!

This has been a very long season, but we achieved our goal. I would like to start by congratulating the Girls team for a great season. A team comprised of mostly freshman and sophomores and one senior, they finished 10th place overall, and the future looks good for the girls XC team.

I know last year left a sour taste on the boys team, missing 3rd place to Santa Rosa by 6 points. The majority of the Varsity boys dedicated themselves by putting in 300 to 400 miles over the summer. By season's end, they will approach 700-800 miles. As the season progressed, different line-ups of the 10 Varsity runners kept us in the top 3 teams at most of the invitational that we've competed. By season's end, I finally had my top 7 Varsity boys.

As we approached NCS, I scored out the meet every way I could. I had us going anywhere from 1st to 4th place. I showed the boys on my dry-erase board their best times and hours, warning not to be complacent. They just looked at me and said, "Coach, we will do this"; well, they did it!

Leading the boys team all season long is Charles Perkins, placing 4th overall at 15:33. Charlie can really be hard on himself. He has the talent to have won this race, but not just today. But he is the front of the rope that is pulling the other 6 guys along.

Placing 5th overall in 15:45 was Zachary Perkins in his finest race ever, not only did he PR by 35 seconds to break the 16 minute barrier but is now a 3rd all-time on the Hornets list for the Hayward course. Placing 14th overall was Hector Lopez-Garcia who PR by 1 second at 16:23, keeping in mind this is his first season running cross country. Most runners take all four years to 16 minutes for 3 miles. Hector is a true, natural talent. Placing 19th overall at 16:38, is 2nd year runner Brandon Sepp. Not only did he PR by an amazing 42 seconds; he also made the all-time list for the Hayward course at 19th place. Rounding out the 5th man spot was Taylor Hadidian, 55th overall at 17:58. TJ has had a great season and mostly has held down the 5th spot all season. Rounding out the 6th and 7th spot were Will Colvin and Tyler Parsons, both knocking off 20 or more seconds off their PR's.

We have one more race to go-State Championships. I hope you young men will always remember how you represented Alameda High School XC for the rest of your lives.

Finally, I would like to thank coach Bruce who has been such a great help to me throughout my 3 years. He has been a great source of knowledge and advice on all matters of cross country that have helped me so much. Thanks also to all the parents who helped to drive, putting together the car wash, planning awards night, assisting me at meets, and the photographer parents. We could not have done this without you.

ONE MORE RACE GENTLEMEN, LET'S GO OUT WITH PRIDE!

WOMEN

2009 ACCAL Champions

The Hornet girls and boys had a great day at Kennedy Grove today, Fri 11/6 as we won all five races in the ACCAL league championships.

Girls: as the person who was supposed to run the races got there 12 minutes before the first race, I had to jump in and try to get things going---I apologize to you all if I got cranky and also that I was not able to speak to each of you after your respective race---in particular I thought that Irene had a great race and was very proud of you all that fell down and got back up and finished a strong race. I am extremely pleased with all of you---we had very difficult conditions---we had the course incorrectly changed on us in the middle of the varsity race---we fell---we were soaked and dirty---some of us ran into nettles---some of us were hurt---and yet we all finished, we all sweated, we all worked hard and most importantly we ran as a team and shared the good and the bad with each other.

In the JV: Sarah Spencer won the race by more than a minute over the second runner who happened to be Dominica Vitucci. Sarah ran 21:17 and Dom ran 22:22, they were followed by McCaulay with an outstanding last high school race---gritting her teeth and fighting for every second---what a great captain and example to us, Rebeckah Vitucci came in 2 seconds behind Cauls (22:26 and 22:28) Naomi was 6th in the race as a Berkeley girl snuck in for 5th, Naomi ran 22:30 and Megan was hard on her heels in 22:41 for 7th place and then came Ana in 9th place with a time of 22:50 for one of her best races and a medal. That meant our 2nd thru 7th powered in with only 28 seconds between them. Sara "Bosco" came in 12th at 23:30 in her last C/C race, Utie got up off the mudslide she rode on for 19th place in 25:37, Charisse worked hard into 23rd and a time of 29:03 with Amanda finishing in 26th with a time of 34:03, Rainey in 28th at 35:18 and Remy getting her season done ahead of 4 DeAnza girls in 32nd at 37:04.

When I saw that Berkeley had their two best runners fit and ready to run I was very nervous for our varsity runners. But we have improved a great deal since the first race against Berk and we were able to overcome the fact that they were 1st and 2nd in the team scoring. Irene pushed into 4th place (26:54), Kelly picked herself up and out of the mud to come in fifth (27:19) we let a Berk girl slip into 6th, but then came our pack which has strengthened so much in the last month or so. Gina 7th (28:21), Lindsi 8th (28:50), JB 9th (28:52), and Emma 10th (28:56), then a Berk girl, a PV girl and then Julia came in 13th in a time of 30:07 Close to the pack and ahead of two Berk girls including their fifth runner---by doing that she displaced the 5th girl for Berk and got us another point. We won in a close race 28 to 31---so every girl played an important part in our victory. We now have a wet banner---it should be dry soon----to hang in the gym as the 2009 ACCAL champions----and I am very happy---I hope you all are too.

C/C season goes too fast---I just started getting to know you---and already most of you are done. However, we have the makings of a strong team for the next few years so I hope we all stay together. Also senior veteran Stephanie made a good decision by giving her spot to Julia in this race so she can continue to get healthy and be able to run in Hayward in two weeks---and Julia helped us in this nasty race---so good move Steph and thanks!!

MEN

I would like to start by congratulating the girls JV and Varsity teams. Coach Bruce has done it again. Great job, girls!

On August 17th of this year, the first official day of practice, I was very excited to see whom would make up our 2009 team. I was not disappointed. Being that I would have a lot of seniors leaving after this season, this incoming group would be the key to coming years. Fast forward to league championship at Kennedy Grove.

The future of the Cross Country team looks great. The freshman boys team captured 8 of the top ten places in the worst of conditions, constant rain and mud. XC at it's best.

Freshman
The top 5 freshman all season long performed as expected. Leading the way, first overall was Karl Bliven in 17:03, followed by Michael Moler, 2nd at 17:11. Taking the 4th spot was Matt Neff in 17:15, followed by Brian Wong, 5th at 17:40. Taking the 6th spot was Jeremiah Lewis at 17:55. Taking the 8th spot was Steven Carlson in 18:53. I have to mention Steven was leading all runners to the halfway mark when the failure of the course monitor to be at the turn around spot caused him to run an extra quarter mile longer than all other runners. This was very unfortunate but not unprecedented. Steven still managed to place 8th overall. Taking the 9th and 10th place were Cameron Beene at 19:16 and Mitchell Quon at 19:47 in their finest race of the year. Rounding out the freshman runners were Ken High 21;44; and Deepak Sharma in 23:58.

JV
The JV boys also captured 1st place overall by taking the 1st five places. Leading the way, 1st overall, was Billy Be in 16:36, followed by Michael Bugarin, 2nd in 16:38. First year sophomore Daniel Arnstein, 3rd overall in 16:43, followed by Jamie Kelly, 4th at 16:53. Rounding out the fifth spot, first year runner Jon Mykal Alioto-Reyes in 16:59. The remaining JV team as follows: Michael Hoye 17:23; Nicholas Raber 17:25; Emmanuel Boquiren 18:21; Nick Liu 18:25; Brandon Roper 18:57; Derek Liang 21:22; and Andres Vargas-Johnson 21:49.

Varsity
What can I say about these boys, other than they are on a mission. All seven starters placing in the first 11 places was simply dominating. Leading the Hornets all season long was Charlie Perkins, 1st overall in 19:08; followed by his brother Zach Perkins, 2nd at 20:07. taking the 3rd spot was Brandon Sepp at 20:34; followed by Hector Lopez-Garcia, 4th at 21:05. In the 6th spot was Taylor Hadidian at 22:05; followed by Will Colvin, 8th at 22:08; and rounding out the 11th spot was Tyler Parsons at 22:49.

This is one of the best Varsity XC teams Alameda has ever produced, and our mission is not over. Your continued hard work should bring us to our goal in the coming weeks.

I am so proud of all the efforts of both the girls and the boys teams capturing all the titles in the 2009 ACCAL Championships.

@ Mt. Sac Invitational
October 24

For the first time this season, we have all 7 Varsity starters. And what a performance! Four of the seven made the all-time list for the Mt. Sac course. Led again by Charlie Perkins with a PR time of 15:22 for 3.0 miles; not only did he PR but he won his heat, 1st overall in a field of 159 runners. Charlie is having the finest season of any XC runner at Alameda HS since record has been kept. Following Charlie was his brother Zach Perkins, 12th overall and a PR time of 16:14 and is on the verge of breaking 16 minute barrier for 3.0 miles. Next was first year phenom, Hector Lopez-Garcia, 34th overall with a fine time of 16:50 and also making the all-time list. Followed by Brandon Sepp 47th overall in a PR time of 17:08, he is on the verge of breaking 17 minute barrier for 3 miles and also making the all-time list. Next up was Will Colvin who has been coming on strong in his last 3 races to capture the 5th man place on the team in a PR time of 17:47, 83rd overall. Followed by Taylor Hadidian, 89th overall with a fine time of 18:00. Rounding out the 7th spot was Tyler Parsons, 126th overall in 19:03, despite fighting a cold.

This team finished 5th out of 24 teams in our heat against Division I teams. As we are winding down to the end of the season, I feel the team is peaking at the right time.

Congratulations, gentlemen!

~ Coach Nino

WOMEN

AHS went down to Walnut, California on Saturday Oct 24th to run in the prestigious Mt San Antonio College cross-country invitational. One of the largest C/C races in the country and held on the site of the Western Regionals that determines the Western team for the C/C National Championships, it is a great opportunity to learn and to be inspired by so many teams racing. Kelly Hosokawa continues to lead the Hornets as once again she gets onto an all-time list---this time with a time of 21:19 which put her into 36th place overall in the race, Irene Xu was 58th in 22:13, Gina was 61st in 22:20, Emma 72nd in 22:45, Lindsi 75th in 6:52, JB 85th in 23:36 and veteran but first time runner at Mt SAC McCaulay acquitted herself well in 103rd with a time of 24:43---there were 133 runners in the race. Our first five runners were within 1:35 of each other---the second best pack time in the race---and what the team continues to need to succeed.

MEN

I am so proud of both the Varsity and JV squads for their performances at the 2nd Center meet. Starting with the Varsity, sweeping the first 4 spots led by Charlie Perkins at 16:28 for 3.1 miles; followed by Zach Perkins 17:24; Hector Lopez-Garcia 18:31 and Brandon Sepp 18:24; followed by TJ Hadidian 7th 19:14; Tyler Parsons 12th 19:45; Nicholas Raber 17th 20:09; Jamie Kelly 18th 20:15; Michael Hoye 19th 20:19; and Brandon Roper 25th 22:19. The final score was Alameda-17; Berkeley-46.

The JV runners were equally impressive, placing 8 runners in the top 10. Placing 1st overall, freshman Steven Carlson at 11:48 for 2.0 miles, breaking the 12 minute mark for the first time this season. He was followed closely by sophomore Daniel Arnstein, 2nd at 11:55; Emmanuel Boquiren 4th 12:12; Billy Be 5th 12:19; Michael Moler 6th 12:21; Matt Neff 7th 12:30; John Alioto-Reyes 8th 12:32; and Karl Bliven 9th 12:34. The final score was Alameda-18; Berkeley-45.

With two weeks left in the season, for the majority of the team (JV), I am confident based on their performances that Alameda will show well at the League Championship. All the hard work had and will pay off as we wind down the season.

@ Mariner Invitational
October 17

MEN

Great overall performances both by the Varsity and Frosh/Soph teams!

Despite missing key runners on both squads, the Varsity managed to placed 4th overall team with only 5 runners. Leading the team again was Charlie Perkins, 5th overall with a time of 17:03; followed by Zach Perkins, 14th at 17:55; Hector Lopez-Garcia 25th, 18:11; Michael Hoye 71st 20:41; and James Kelly 77th 21:05. The Varsity team successfully placed at every invitational this season despite not having all 7 starters run together. This shows the depth of the overall Varsity team. I'm looking forward to seeing what this team can do with all 7 starters.

The Frosh/Soph team placed 8th overall; led by Daniel Arnstein 21st overall at 12:32; folowed by Nicholas Raber 37th 12:59; Billy Be 46th 13:09; Michael Moler 48th 13:09; Emmanuel Boquiren 52nd 13:15; Karl Bliven 53rd 13:15; Matt Neff 63rd 13:27; Cameron Beene 78th 13:52; Brian Wong 84th 14:03; Mitchell Quon 109th 14:46; Deepak Sharma 129th 15:34; and Ken High 144th 16:28. A very good performance by the Frosh/Soph squad!

The JV team did very well with only 2 runners (making them an incomplete team): Jon Mikal Alioto-Reyes 34th 13:36 and Brandon Roper 49th 14:13.

As we get closer to the end of the season, I look forward to more great efforts from all the teams.

~ Coach Nino

WOMEN

AHS went to Garin Park in the Hayward hills to run at the Mariner invitational on Saturday Oct 17th. It was the last invitational of the season for most of the team as only the varsity will attend the MT SAC run next weekend.

The frosh-soph girls ran well as they continue to improve and took third place in their race for medals to the first 7 girls on the team. The first eight girls were within 1:35 of each other and that pack is what the team will need to do well in the next few races. Kelly Hosokawa continues to impress with her ninth place in the race in the time of 14:43, in 11th place was hard-running Sarah Spencer at 14:52, followed by Irene in 15th overall 15:03, Emma 18th in 15:09, JB 35th in 15:57, Lindsi 40th 16:04, Naomi 42nd in 16:09, Julia 44th in 16:18, Charisse running well was 78th in 19:44, Rainey came in at 22:36 and Remy in 23:00.

There were 86 runners in the large school race and additional 45 runners in the small school race shared the course at the same time. We were unable to field complete teams in the Jr/Sr race or the varsity race due to injuries and other commitments, but in the JV race Rebeckah Vitucci ran 16:25, her sister Dominica ran 16:35 (which put two more girls in the group within two minutes of Kelly's time), Ana Santos ran 17:24 and Clare Forbes ran 18:08 and in the varsity race--senior veterans ran together with Megan doing her best in a time of 25:36, closely followed by Gina in 25:40 and stalwart McCaulay in 27:10. Captain Stephanie couldn't finish as she strained a muscle but stayed on the course and rooted for our boys in some of their races.

October 15

WOMEN

The Hornets were invited to participate in a meet at Crab Cove on Thursday the 15th against Encinal and Piedmont. This was our only race against our old foes on our traditional home course.

The girls ran well and swept the JV race, as neither Piedmont or Encinal could mount a full team. Sarah Spencer led the JVs again in a time of 15:51 winning the race, in second was Jessica Burns--16:25, 3rd was McCaulay Singer-Milnes--17:40, 4th was Sara Boscacci--18:02, in 6th overall was Ana Santos--18:34, followed by Clare Forbes--18:37, Utie in her best race--18:48, Charisse Dimalanta--21:17, Amanda Woodworth--22:41, Remy McCon with her mom and grandparents watching--23:09, and Rainey Dumars--23:40.

In Varsity, the strong Piedmont girls nipped AHS 27 pts to out 30. Phenom Kelly Hosokawa was 4th overall in 21:26, spirited Gina 7th in 22:28, hard-working Lindsi in 22:48, recovering Irene in 22:56, captain Stephanie in 23:13, developing Emma in 23:25, veteran Megan in 23:31, newly-jacketed Dominica in 23:46, strengthening Naomi 23:47, sibling rival Rebeckah 23:48, and closing Julia in 23:49---Quite a pack at the end of the race---any of whom are capable of breaking out of that pack in the next few weeks.

~ Bruce

MEN

The Hornets competed in a non-league match-up with Encinal and Piedmont at the Crab Cove course. Despite holding up the top 3 runners, the Varsity did well, beating Encinal and narrowly losing to Piedmont. The Varsity was led by Brandon Sepp in his finest race of the year, with 17:19; followed by TJ Hadidian at 18:05; Will Colvin 18:23; Tyler Parsons 18:31; Michael Hoye 18:47; Nicholas Raber 18:50; James Kelly 18:57 and Brandon Roper 20:33.

Congratulations to the JV team comprised of freshman, sophomore and junior runners. Placing eight runners in the top 10, placing first overall freshman sensation, Steven Carlson at 12:53; followed by Emmanuel Boquiren, 2nd 13:04; Daniel Arnstein, 3rd 13:10; Karl Bliven 6th, 13:22; Billy Be, 7th 13:32; Michael Moler, 8th 13:34; Jon Alioto-Reyes, 9th 13:45; Matt Neff 10th 13:53; Brian Wong 12th 1358; Nick Liu 15th 14:19; Jeremiah Lewis, 18th 14:29; Mitchel Quon 21st 14:58; Cameron Beene 23rd 14:59; Andres Vargas-Johnson 27th 15:30; Deepak Sharma 30th 15:35 and Ken High 31st 15:38.

Another great job by the Varsity and JV boys!

@ Clovis Invitational
October 10

WOMEN

The girls went to Fresno to run on the State Championship course in the Clovis Invitational this past Saturday, Oct 10th. Depite some illness and a warm day, they all worked hard and did well---and as we had 3 freshwomen and 3 sophomores running, hopefully they learned the course well for future races there. Kelly Hososkawa earned another spot on our all-time records page by running 22:37 to lead the team again. Senior team leader Gina Salerno just missed getting on the list for the second time in a time of 23:13 closely followed by Lindsi Tu in 23:15 and Emma Fraser in a time of 23:16 both also just missing the list. Rebeckah Vitucci ran 24:49, Irene Xu ran 25:17, and Julia Fanger ran 25:19 for the Hornets. I believe it was good experience for all. Thank you to Jessica Burns for coming along as an alternate and was ready to run if needed.

~ Bruce

MEN

With a mix of seniors, juniors, sophomores and a freshman, the boys performed well at the Clovis invitational. Leading the way was Hector Lopez-Garcia with a time of 17:16, placing him 22nd on the all-time list for the state meet course. Hector continues to show his natural talent, having made the Hornets all-time records in all of his races. He was followed by Taylor Hadidian, continuing to hold down the 6th spot in the Varsity team with a time of 18:38; followed by Will Colvin 18:39; Tyler Parsons 18:45; Emmanuel Boquiren 18:47; Michael Hoye 19:07 and freshman Steven Carlson 19:11.

Despite this team of newcomers to the Clovis invitational, they all performed very well. I appreciate their efforts and the hard work they have put into this race.

Out of 32 teams, Alameda placed 2nd to Carlmont of Belmont. The Varsity team was led by Charlie Perkins, 2nd overall at 12:08, placing him 6th on the all-time Artichoke invitational. He was followed by Zach Perkins, 3rd overall at 12;18, tying him 7th on the all-time Artichoke invitational; followed by Hector Lopez-Garcia, 12th overall at 12:37, then Brandon Sepp, 29th overall at 13:11; followed by TJ Hadidian 65th overall at 13:53 and Will Colvin 77th overall at 14:11.

What an outstanding effort by all the boys especially the Varsity squad for placing 2nd overall team despite missing one of the top 5 starters. This shows that you guys are very close to achieving your goals this year of being one of the top teams at NCS.

WOMEN

AHS drove down the pumpkin-lined road to Half Moon Bay on Saturday the 3rd of Oct to run in the Artichoke invitational at the high school there. The girls collected 5 medals out of the 17 that finished the race.

In the Frosh-Soph girls race the team was third overall, narrowly missing second place as Kelly Hosokawa and Irene Xu won medals in 16:52 and 16:53 respectively followed by Lindsi Tu 17:16 (just missing a medal in 21st place),Jessica Burns 26th in 17:43, Rebeckah Vitucci 18:03 in 28th, and Julia Fanger in 18:07 for 31 st place, Emma Fraser was injured early in the race and was unable to finish the race. In last year's race Lindsi ran 17:52 and JB ran 17:46 so both improved this year.

For the JVs, Sarah Spencer continued her good efforts taking 12th place in 17:27, Dominica Vitucci was 15th in 17:39, Naomi Chan passed 7 or 8 runners between the hill and the finish line to get a medal in 19th place running 17:58, Ana Santos was 58th in 19:54, Charisse Dimalanta wass 81st in 21:32 and Remy McCon coming back from some illness ran 23:02 in 90th out of the 99 runners that ran this race.

In the varsity race I put all the many year veterans together to share the moment and the hard work as a team as senior Gina Salerno led her sisters in a time of 17:10, followed By Stephanie Chan in 17:39, Kaila Chan in 18:13 , Megan Goldspring in 18:13, and McCaulay Singer-Milnes in 18:59. In last years race Gina ran 17:13 and McCaulay ran 19:08 so both improved this year. Sara Boscacci, unable to run this race, came to share with the other seniors and support the team---thanks Sara. These seniors are the ones who are helping build the young team into a strong bunch of runners and I continue to count on them for their leadership and caring involvement.

@ RAM Invitational - Hayward
September 26

WOMEN

Nineteen girls went to Daly City and ran in the Ram invitational this past Saturday. Of the 19, eight received medals.

The girls Frosh/Soph team were third and very close to 2nd place with Kelly Hosokawa, Irene Xu, Emma Fraser and Lindsi Tu all garnering medals, in the JV race Jessica Burns, Dominica Vitucci and Ana Santos all medaled and Gina Salerno was the sole varsity medal winner as only three girls finished that race for us. Emma Fraser had a super race and is on the rise on our young team. Ana Santos pushed herself to her best race, and I think that McCaulay Singer-Milnes had one of her best races ever. The overall team times were: Kelly H. 17:12, Irene Xu 17:43, Gina Salerno 18:01, Emma Fraser 18:06, Lindsi Tu 18:25, Rebeckah Vitucci 18:34, Jessica Burns 18:59, Naomi Chan 19:01, Sarah Spencer 19:08, Julia Fanger (who fell near the packed start) 19:30, Dominica Vitucci 19:37, Kaila Chan 20:17, McCaulay Singer-Milnes 20:20, Ana Santos 20:32, Utie Etchie 21:59, Emily Bliven 23:40, Charisse Dimalanta 24:04, Amanda Woodworth 24:53, and stalwart Rainey Dumars ran 27:26 and had the good grace to beat a girl from our league rival Berkeley High. Kelly, Emma, and Naomi made it onto our all time freshman list and Irene made it onto the Soph list, Gina and Julia narrowly missed their respective lists.

Great job all, Bruce.

@ Farmer's Invitational - Hayward
August 19

WOMENS...

We got our first invitational under our belt on Saturday at Hayward High--the site of the NCS championships in November. The best news of the day was that first time Alameda runners led the team in all of the races we ran.

Emma Fraser (14:31.7) was the AHS leader in the F/S race followed by first time runner Rebeckah Vitucci (14:32), Sarah Spencer (14:15) and Dominica Vitucci (14:39) both newbies to C/C were our first two runners in the JV race, and talented freshwoman Kelly Hosokawa led the AHS team in the varsity race. What's more, Kelly's time was equal to our best time last year at Hayward which graduate Linnea Oddie ran at the North Coast Championships last November. We have a superb young team being led and taught by strong senior veterans Kaila Chan(Var--23:49), McCaulay Singer-Milnes(JV 15:32), Gina Salerno(Var--22:33), Stephanie Chan(Var--22:49), Megan Goldspring (JV--14:47) and Sara Boscacci (unable to run this weekend). In the Frosh/ Soph race Emma and Rebeckah were followed by Soph Jessica Burns who bettered her time from last year in the same race in a time of 14:45 (last year 14:58), Frosh Rebekah Dosa 15:42, Soph Ana Santos 15:49, F Utieyin Etchie 16:51, F Charisse Dimalanta 18:17, F Amanda Woodworth 18:22, F Remy McCon 18:34, and F Rainey Dumars 19:43. In the JV race Camila Martinez-Granada (15:12) and Emily Bliven (17:42) filled out the team. We ran 8 girls in the varsity race, three freshies, two sophs and three seniors. Which gives us alot to look forward to in the next couple of years. In addition to Kelly and the seniors, Soph Irene Xu (22:42), Soph Lindsi Tu (23:18), Frosh Naomi Chan (23:50) and Frosh Julia Fanger (24:04) ran the three mile course for us.

Everyone is working hard and there are some great up-and-comers on this year's team.

MENS...

Congratulations to the Boys XC team for all their outstanding efforts in the first race of the season.

Frosh/Soph
Leading off in the Frosh/Soph race was soph Emmanuel Boquiren at 11:38. The rest of the runners and their times are as follows: frosh Steven Carlson, 12:03; soph Daniel Arnstein, 12:14; frosh Carl Bliven, 12:24; soph Billy Be, 12:32; frosh Michael Moler, 12:34; frosh Matt Neff, 12:50; soph Nick Liu, 12:52; soph Nicholas Raber, 12:59; frosh Brian Wong, 13:02; frosh Cameron Beene, 13:04; frosh Jeremiah Lewis, 13:24; frosh Chris Parsons, 13:25; frosh Mitchell Quon, 13:38; frosh Ken High, 13:54; soph Andres Vargas Johnson, 14:37 and frosh Deepak Sharma, 14:51.

I'm very encouraged by what I saw at the Frosh/Soph race. There were 9 runners under 13 minutes for 2 miles and 6 runners under 14 minutes for 2 miles. This shows excellent pack running which should carry us through the season.

JV
Congrats to Jamie Kelly for placing 8th with a time of 11:49 in the JV race and earning himself a medal. He was followed by Brandon Roper, 12:46; and new-comer in his first race, John Alioto-Reyes at 13:13.

Varsity
What an outstanding first effort by the Varsity squad!! Despite missing our #3 runner, Liam Davis to injury, we placed 2nd overall out of 20 teams. Taking 1st place overall in the Varsity race, Charlie Perkins shattered his personal best by 30 seconds with a winning time of 15:28 to become the #1 all-time Hornets runner at the Hayward course. Also with a personal best is Zach Perkins, 4th place overall at 16:20; placing him 10th all-time runner at the Hayward course; followed by Hector Lopez-Garcia, in his first race, placing 6th overall with a time of 16:24, placing him 11th all-time runner at the Hayward course. He was followed by Brandon Sepp, 19th overall at 17:20; followed by T.J. Hadidian, 37th overall at 18:01; followed by Tyler Parsons, 52nd overall at 18:29 and Michael Hoye, 64th overall at 18:59.
