When we set out at the beginning of the XC season, the Varsity boys had a goal: win League and make it to State Championship. Although we fell short by the smallest of margins -- 6 points to 3rd place team Santa Rosa -- I could not be any prouder of their efforts. Six of seven had their personal best times and they continued to run as a team; only 50 seconds separated from the 1st to the 6th runner. As a comparison to the 2007 NCS team, overall time was (1:25:09), average runners' time (17:01) for 3 miles. The 2008 NCS team overall time is (1:22:01), average runners' time (16:24) for 3 miles.
The Hornets were led by Charles Perkins with a new school record for the Hayward course of (15:59); followed by Liam Davis, 2nd (16:17); Zachary Perkins, 3rd (16:29); Alex Colvin, 4th (16:37); Daniel Lebe, 5th (16:39); Scott Nickell, 6th (16:50) and Albert Chu, 7th (17:55).
Again, I am so proud of what these boys accomplished this year! And with our top 3 runners returning next year, we will compete again for a State meet berth.

WOMEN
We ran our last race of the year today and did very well. There were 117 runners that completed the race and we all placed between 58th and 75th, so there were a lot of people behind us. There were 569 girl runners in all 5 divisions, and our division had three of the top four times in all of the races including the top two times all day. Those of you that ran the varsity race in Sept at Hayward all improved your times--Linnea by 4 seconds, connie by 26 seconds, Gina by 6 seconds and Stephanie by 48 seconds, Lindsi ran in the F/S race in Sept and it is hard to compare the two races, but she ran 14:58 in the two mile race and there is no way in my mind that at that time she could have run the third mile at the same pace---so she improved as well. Linnea was our leader as she has been all year she ran 21:45 in 58th place, Connie a great run in 21:52 and 62nd place, Gina was 67th in 22:09 with Stephanie close behind in 22:13 for 69th, Kaila was 73rd in 22:30 and Lindsi was 75th in 22:38. All of you ran hard as was evident in your faces and acheys after the race, I am so proud of all of you. Jessica did not finish the race, but she did what she was told and left the field when she felt her knee and ankle begin to hurt more than any of us wanted. You all have so much heart and worked so hard in this race and all season, thank you all. Also thanks to McCaulay and Megan who were there and supportive and willing helpers to me. I do not coach for the love of this sport, I coach for the wonderfulness of you girls who are so willing to put yourselves through all it takes to compete in this difficult sport. By the end of the season, I am ready for it to be done from the standpoint of dealing with all the issues (driving, weather, injuries, decision-making, league championship work etc.) however, I always feel the loss of you good friends at this time of the year and it takes me a few days to become un-sad.
I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving and I look forward to award's nite, although that final evening always leaves me in another funk for a few more days.
For those of you who have not brought in your warm-ups---Nino will be at school on Monday and would like the unis brought in then so he can store them and not have to wait until award's nite to do that---also we will sell our old (clean) warm-up jackets on that nite for $15 if you would like one. Thanks again for giving me something worthwhile to do in my life and for sharing yourselves and families with me. Love, Bruce

Congratulations to all the JV and Varsity boys-the 2008 ACCAL XC champs.
It has been a long season but I cannot be any prouder than all the JV and Varsity boys who participated in the league championship.
The JV boys swept the first eleven spots led by David Vergara, first place, 12:15; followed by Brandon Sepp, 2nd, 12:21; top freshman runner John Tupasi, 3rd, 12:24; Daniel Higuchi, 4th 12:31; Michael Bugarin, 5th, 12:36; Brendan Hoye, 6th, 12:38; Tyler Parsons, 7th, 12:43; Will Colvin, 8th, 12:56; Taylor Hadidian, 9th, 13:11; Chris Chui, 10th, 13:14; Michael Hoye, 11th, 13:18. Other great performances were Emmanuel Boquiren 13th, 13:26; Jamie Kelly 16th 13:38; Billy Be 17th 13:43; Calvin Fong 19th 13:51; Ryan Hunter 23rd 14:11; Ryan Rafferty 24th 14:16: Nick Liu 25th 14:18; Brandon Roper 29th 14:52; and Andres Vargas-Johnson 30th 14:53.
Varsity boys were led by Charlie Perkins, 4th place overall at 17:53; followed by Liam Davis, 5th 18:09; Scott Nickell 6th 18:15; Zach Perkins 7th 18:37; Trevor Araujo 8th 18:59; Alex Colvin 9th 19:03 and Dan Lebe 13th 19:34.
The Varsity boys continue to embrace the team concept by running as a pack, thereby capturing six of the top ten places overall in the league championship race to become the ACCAL champions.

WOMEN
I AM TIRED... you guys wore me out---I was out helping set up the course around ten and then they had me running around at the race---and then I had to strain my voice telling everyone how good you all were.
JV:
Admittedly we did not have a huge amount of competition in the JV race, however, many of the girls that ran in the varsity race were really JV level performers and I am quite sure we would have done as well against most if not all of them. In the JV race we got some great performances and it is nice to go 1 through 9 regardless of whom you are running against. Clare clearly ran her best race as she improved all year long and became the JV champ w/ a time of 15:47, then we had three girls under 17 minutes---Emily in 2nd at 16:08, McCaulay at 16: 19, and freshwoman Dido who ran her best race in 16:39, followed by Taylor 5th in 17:08, Tati 6th in 17:28, Fran 7th in 17:35, Amanda 8th in 17:48, Grace ninth in 18:02 and Claudia 13th in 18:36. Claudia, Taylor, Tati and Fran have been good friends to me for years and they ran their last C/C race in high school---I hope they enjoyed their time with me and the team.Var:
For the varsity---we overcame a strong day by Berkeley and became the pennant winning ACCAL champs. We faced much more difficult runners in the BSAL but we were third in that league running against StMary's, who have a shot at winning the State meet in D-4 and Piedmont who might get to the State meet also in D-4, so we have done well and have had a great season with at least one race left. Linnea has led our team all year long and did so again today. Running a credible 2nd place against the reigning 800m track star from Richmond she came in at 23:11 a scant minute behind the Richmond winner, Connie has had a great senior season and was 4th overall in 23:47, Gina was 6th in 24:00, Freshwoman comer Lindsi was 7th in 24:40, followed by K.C. 25:12(12th), Stephanie (13th) 25:16 and Megan in 14th at 25:49. There were 35 runners in the race so we did very well. Thanks to J.B. who reluctantly didn't run for the sole purpose of helping me. Practice again on Monday as usual. I plan to get us to Hayward one day next week and have a pool workout one day so get out your bathing suits and be prepared. Monday will be a run day. It was a nice day for us---lots of medals and ribbons and the team pennant and great runs by all. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication.~ Coach Bruce

WOMEN
We went down to L.A. this past weekend and had a great trip---a lot of fun and some good running. The bad news was that we had to run at 7:30 in the morning and the good news was that we got to run at 7:30 in the morning---hard to get up and go, but great running conditions. Four girls broke the 22 minute mark when none did it last year. Linnea led the way again for us and got herself on the all-time list in 19th place w/ a time of 21:08, K.C. made it on the list as well w/ her time of 21:50 followed by Gina at 21:51 (just missing the list), Connie 21:52, Stephanie 22:40, J.B. at 23:10 and Lindsi with her time of 23:22. Thanks to Jessica's mom Jen for being our friendly helpful chaperone/driver and to Megan who gave up her spot to Connie and supported us and helped us all have a better time.

WOMEN
The girls ran the dreaded Joaquin Miller course today (10/16) and while it was difficult and we had a few people sick and slightly injured we all survived (even I, who suffers as you all do).
Also I presume we all learned some things about how to approach this course.
Running for the victorious JV team were McCaulay in third place with a record list achieving time of 17:54, Emily also making the list at 17:56 in 4th place, Clare in 5th at 18.01, Fran 6th 18:04, Taylor 7th 18:24, Tati 8th 18:27, frosh Dido 9th 18:33, Claudia 13th 19:04, and Amanda 16th 20:58 out of 21 runners --- great job by all.
In the varsity race we were pretty well swamped by the strong Piedmont team that was running in their house --- nevertheless we all tried hard and worked the hills as well as we were able on what I consider the hardest course we run on.
Linnea and Connie made it onto the varsity JM course record list w/ times of 25:50 and 26:13 respectively, followed by K.C. in a big finish 26 :34, Gina pushing through some pain in 27:33, freshwoman comer Jessica Burns in 28:08, hardworking Megan in 28:20 and the other newbie Lindsi Tu sniffled her way through her cold in 28:27.
