Men's Team

To look at the results of the 2011 Boys team, this has been a breakout year for most of our top 7 Varsity runners.  This is the second year that 4 of 7 members of this team has run at the State Meet with all four close to PRs.  This year’s Division II was the most competitive I have seen in the last 3 state meets.  I know it would be tough as I had our team starting out 5 to 10 sec faster than their normal first mile just so we would not start in the back of the pack.  Steven, Duc and Cameron would cross the 1st mile in 5:01 to 5:03; followed by Michael, Deepak, and Andrew in 5:11 to 5:15.  This would set the tone for the rest of the race.

Cameron Tu would lead this team with an exceptional time of 16:28; followed by Duc Nguyen at 16:47 and Stephen Carlson at 17:18.  The next 3 runners were Michael Moler 17:35; followed by Deepak Sharma at 17:40 and Andrew Liu at 18:10.

Below is a list of last year’s State Meet and this year’s results:

Men -- #1 Team Time for NCS Championships 1:21.48

Men's Team

What I love about the sport of Cross Country is how every member of the seven runners work toward the goals of the team. And on any given race at some point, they would all be called upon to contribute.

I knew going in that our top 3 runners would need to have exceptional performances for us to return to the State meet. And they were all up to the challenge. Division II improved over last year, you only need to see how close 2nd through 7th teams finished.

With Duc Nguyen finally fully healthy, he would have the finest race of his career. Only a junior, Duc led this team with an exceptional time of 15:47 6th overall, and now 3rd all-time on the Hornets list for the 3 mile Hayward course. Placing 13th overall, and only a sophomore was Cameron Tu with an incredible time of 16:01 to move up to 6th place all-time list for the Hayward course; followed by Steven Carlson 18th overall to move up to 9th all-time on the Hayward course at 16:15. These 3 young men will be crucial to how well this team performs at the State meet.

In the sport of Cross Country, the top 5 runners score, so the remaining 4 runners would have to step up and place well for us to be one of the 3 teams to qualify for State. Deepak Sharma would be the first to step up. He started on the J/V team but over the last month, moved up to the Varsity team. Deepak was the 4th man to score 34th overall at 16:49 and 28th on the all-time list. Michael Moler would round out the 5th spot at 16:56 and 38th overall to close out the team scoring. Andrew Liu, only a sophomore also moved up to the Varsity team in the last month. He would bring in the 6th spot on the team, 52nd overall at 17:18 and will be a big part of this team's future. Rounding out the 7th spot was our lone senior, Emmanuel Boquiren 69th overall at 17:47. I know Emman and Michael have been fighting colds and will no doubt improve on their NCS performances at State.

This team has worked so hard-- going back to June and throughout this season leading up to NCS. They earned the chance to represent Division II at State and I am so proud of what they have accomplished this year.

I would like to thank my assistant coaches, Marty Beene and Nathan Brassmassery for all the guidance and knowledge in helping me prepare this team.

Now, on to State and let's show that we deserve to represent Division II for NCS!

Women's Team

The season finished out at Hayward high at the NCS championships for the AHS girls cross-country team with mixed results. The team had expected to do a little better---but they are now the best team ever at AHS---some individuals wanted to go a little farther---but we placed 5 girls on the all-time list for this course. The season ended with the team having broken almost all of the team time records at the courses we generally run on and the all-time lists at each all having a number of changes on it.

The first team to break the 100 minute mark at this course, we ran 99:45 beating the previous team record by 1:36 held by the 2002 team which had Corinne Roberts (ran at Columbia) and Sarah Orzell (went to the D-3 national C/C race out of Puget Sound university) leading the way. A wonderful accomplishment. Sonia Xu got to 5th place on the all-time list with a time of 19:18 as a sophomore---those above her are all seniors. She placed 12 at this race and missed going to the state meet by one place as an individual. Her senior sister, co-captain Irene, ran in 15th place with a time of 19:35 taking 8th place on the all-time list, Mariko Stenstedt just missed breaking 20 minutes in a strong run going 20:03 for 28th place and moving to 11th on the all-time list, our other senior co-captain, Lindsi Tu was 34th in 20:10, a super race for her placing in the top 3rd of this prestigious race and going on to the all-time list at number 14, Polly Fong continued to improve in the second half of the season running in 41st at 20:39 to make it onto the list at 21st (the two girls immediately above her on the list, Corinne Roberts, who ran at Columbia, and Kristen Wheeler, who ran at Oregon, are two of the strongest girls AHS has ever turned out), and Andie Nguyen was 61st in 21:22, running with heart and determination.

Congratulations to the boys team who are once again advanced to the state meet, by virtue of their fine 3rd place finish yesterday---with special personal kudos to Deepak Sharma who ran a brilliant 3rd mile, passing a number of people and continuing a super season for him.

Clean sweep for Alameda in last ACCAL meet---Frosh boys, JV boys and girls, Varsity boys and girls, all win easily in final league meeting with Pinole Valley, Hercules, De Anza and El Cerrito as Berkeley and the Hornets move on to the new Hayward league in 2012.

Women's Team

Girls recap:

The Alameda hornet cross-country teams ran their last race at Cesar Chavez park in Berkeley (for 4 years at least) on Friday the 4th of November. The girls team overwhelmed their only real competition --- Berkeley. While five teams scored in the varsity race, El Cerrito (87 points), Hercules (114) and Pinole Valley (123) really were not a factor and in the JV race, only Berkeley and Alameda fielded scoring teams.

The strong AHS JV team took the first 3 spots, yielded to Berk for 4th and then took the next 4 places to score 17 points to Berks 46. Winning the race for us was Rebeckah Vitucci in her last C/C race in a time of 12:39, Soph Elise Yuen was close for 2nd place in 12:43, and senior Ana Santos finished her C/C career in great fashion in third, running, 13 minutes flat. In fifth, running 13:05, was freshie Montana Sepp, 6th was soph Maria Sazo in 13:11, Tessa Russell-Harde was 7th in 13:21, then came Jessica Alvarado, 8th in 13:32 (both first year juniors had great seasons), Emma Fraser ran 10th in 13:46, with Soph Danica Liang having a super race in 13:47 for 11th, Rina Santos another freshwoman continues to impress running 13:57 for 12th, Soph Kirsten Hausmann was 13th in 13:58, Jr Nora Lam ran in 15th 14:22, Allison Pang finished her freshwoman season in 18th running 14:47, Siu Yan may have run faster when a dog chased her, came in 19th 15:03, Frosh Rachel Gallegos had her best race as she continued to improve running in 20th in 15:15 with stalwart Doni Uyeno close in 15:19 for 21st and Zee Yaropa was 23rd in 15:22---there were 36 girls in the JV race---since the course has been changed, it is difficult to assess previous races there, but for the moment, on this course, Rebeckah is the JV course record-holder.

The varsity race was a nail-biter for me before it was run---after it was run---I hadn't needed to chew on any nails. The girls ran a designed plan to perfection---everyone taking responsibility for their part. Sonia ran a superb 19:10 for 2nd place in the race, beating the threat of the second Ethiopian runner for Berkeley, E-2 came in and then Irene Xu ran 7 seconds behind her for 4th in 19:42 and taking her place in front of Berkeley's 3rd girl, who ran 20:22---then we finished Berkeley off with Kelly in 6th 20:32, Lindsi in 7th 20:33, Isabel and Polly in 8th and 9th in the same time of 20:34 and Andie running 10th in 20:50, Berkeley's 4th girl was also usurped by an El Cerrito girl and so was 12th and another EC girl was 13th pushing Berk's 5th girl into 14th place and giving Alameda an easy 27 to 35 win. I am so pleased by the response to our team's pre-race meeting---everyone dug deep and overcame illness, tiredness and some aches and pains to perform so well. There were 30 runners in the Var race and our team time was 100:31. Good job everyone.

Men's Team

As we exit the ACCAL for the HAAL League next year, I have asked a lot of the boys team, 300 to 500 miles of summer base running and intense training during the season with a mix of long runs and speed work. All with the help of my assistant coaches Marty Beene and Nathan Brassmassery, the success of this season’s championship would not have been possible.

Freshman Race Alameda 24/Berkeley 35 It all started with the Freshman race, this time led by Bobby Kirwin 2nd overall at 10:33; followed by Khang Luong 3rd at 10:38. These two have battled all season for top freshman. Denver Bishop continues to move up the depth chart in his finest race of the year, 5th at 10:57; followed by Ryan Hosokawa 6th at 10:58. Rounding out the scoring in 8th place was Justin Trinh at 11:05; Donald Wu 9th at 11:06; Pravash Gautam 10th 11:39; Joe Jarecke 11th 11:40; Gary Zhou 14th 11:50; Justin Wai 16th 12:28. What a great performance by the Frosh team! They have done it all season and will no doubt contend for years to come.

JV Race Alameda 17/Berkeley 38 After winning the Freshman race, the JV team continued the winning ways in impressive fashion placing all 5 scoring runners in the top 6. Senior Nick Raber would easily outpace everyone, 1st at 10:06; followed by Miguel Hidalgo 2nd 10:26; Nick Liu 3rd 10:32; Steven Li 5th 10:44; and Cameron Beene 6th at 11:03. Excellent pack running! Other great performances were Jonathan Chan 11:10; Nathan Yick 11:14; Matt Neff 11:25; Jordan Wong 11:58; Ken High 12:53 and William Maiers 14:53. Nearly all of the JV runners ended their season with a PR. Outstanding job, gentlemen!

Varsity Race Alameda 21/Berkeley 41 Heading into this race, I figured it to be real close--not having Steven Carlson, one of the top 3 due to a leg injury. We already defeated Berkeley without Duc Nguyen in the 1st Center Meet by a small margin. The Varsity team responded with an outstanding effort! Capturing the 1st and 2nd spots with a time of 16:34 were Cameron Tu and Duc Nguyen. Berkeley would take the next 2 places, followed by Michael Moler 5th 17:08; Emmanuel Boquiren 6th 17:14; and Deepak Sharma 7th at 17:17 to round out the scoring. All five of these guys would PR on this course. Andrew Liu would place 10th at 17:46, followed by Daniel Arnstein 12th 18:05 and Chris Parsons 15th at 18:19.

As we head towards NCS in two weeks, I feel this Varsity team is peaking at the right time. I am very confident in our top 3---Steven, Duc and Cameron. And what can I say about how well Michael and Emmanuel continue to improve in the 4th and 5th spot with Deepak and Andrew closing the gap. Excellent job, gentlemen!

@ Mt. SAC Invitational (Mt. San Antonio College, Walnut)
10/21-22/11

Men's Team

The last three years have played out in a similar manner with our best performance coming at Mnt SAC. This year’s team came ever so close to beating the 2009 team time of 1:23.21 to 1:23.29. compared to last year’s team of the same members of 1:25.10. What an incredible improvement!

The top three runners would move up the all-time list for the Mnt SAC course. Leading the Hornets was Duc Nguyen at 16:14 7th all-time; followed by Cameron Tu 16:15 8th all-time and Steven Carlson 16:27 12th all-time. These 3 young men—2 juniors, 1 sophomore have shared in leading this very talented team and will most likely continue to move up on all the XC records.

The next three young men were Emmanuel Boquiren who continues to hang on to a top 5 spot by edging out teammate Michael Moler. Both would run excellent times of 17:16 and 17:17 respectively. They were followed by Deepak Sharma who has been coming on late in the season with a time of 17:44. And lastly was Daniel Arnstein at 19:38. Daniel has been struggling with some health issues that has slowed him down, but he still gave it his all.

As we go forward, it looks promising for the future, as we head towards League Championships and NCS.

Women's Team

Alameda's cross-country teams went to Walnut, California on Saturday the 22nd of October to run in the largest cross-country meet in the world and continued to do well in their races. With races of 100 to 150 people going off every 7 to 10 minutes, it is an amazing event to participate in and to see all of the teams and colors and excitement that is generated there.

The girls team were 7th out of 20 scoring teams in the division 1 race that we ran in. They posted the best team time (top five runner's times combined) of any AHS team, beating the 2005 team that went to state that year by 30 seconds. Eight teams from our division in the North Coast Section (NCS) made the trip and our girls had the best time of them all and were 12th overall among all NCS teams that ran, in next year's new league we will face Castro Valley and Bishop O'Dowd, both of whom we beat here this weekend. Only one girl's team placed higher in their race in the last ten years when the 2004 team was 6th in the race but running 3 and a half minutes slower as a team. Sonia Xu continues her onslaught on the team's record lists, coming in 9th for a medal here, taking 44 seconds off of last year's time, in 19:32 for 4th place all-time at Alameda high---Devaja Shafer was 3rd in 2005, Kristin Wheeler was 4th in 2003 and Corinne Roberts was 8th in 2002 (all seniors), so Sonia's 9th place here as a sophomore is a significant accomplishment. Kelly Hosokawa continues to be a strong leader for the team and ran 20:06 this year in some discomfort for 27th place with senior captain Irene Xu, running her last race here, right behind Kelly in 28th with a time of 20:09, 23 seconds better than last year--Kelly gets another spot on our all-time list in 10th and Irene ties for 11th best ever at AHS, next in for us was our other senior captain, Lindsi Tu, running 20:49, a 21 second improvement from last year and a 2 minute 54 second improvement from her freshwoman year---50th in the race and getting to 25th on our list. Both captains have had some super experiences at Mt SAC, have done very well here, and have been great positive influences on our team for the past few years. Sophomore Andie Nguyen ran 20:53 for 56th in the race and reached 27th on our all-time list, she improved 13 seconds from last year, Polly Fong had a great race, improving by 34 seconds from last year, running 21:05 for 60th in the race and getting on the AHS list at 28th, and Mariko Stenstedt came in 61st running 21:12 on some slippery shoes. there were 138 runners in the race and we were all easily in the top half of the race. An excellent event for us with good times and a view of some of our competition in the NCS and where we stand in relation to them.

@ Mariner Invitational (Garin Park, Hayward)
10/15/11

Men's Team

A partial squad of sophomores (3) and freshmen (7) traveled down to Hayward on Saturday for an invitational that was not originally on our schedule, while many of our brothers were busy taking the PSAT. We set up camp alongside two other Alameda schools, St. Joe's and ACLC, so our team was able to socialize a bit with their friends at these other schools.

While the course distance was the same as our league meet the previous Wednesday at 2.1 miles, the difficulty was not, as the Garin Park course includes a significant hill at about the half-mile mark. Nevertheless, our guys continued their remarkable string of spectacular pack running, with a 1st to 5th spread of a miniscule 34 seconds, lowest among all of the boys' teams in all divisions, and lowest among all but one of the girls' teams. In fact, their spread from 1st to 7th was only 47 seconds, which was lower than almost every other team's 1st-to-5th spread.

The importance of every team member was illustrated today, as three teams (including us) were in the hunt for the 4th place team medal, ultimately separated by only 5 points. Any one runner on these three teams running just a few seconds slower or faster would have changed the outcome. As it turned out, we finished with 114 points in 5th place, beaten by our friends at Westmoor High by only 3 points, but squeaking in ahead of 6th place James Logan High by only 2 points. The times were Miguel at 12:25, followed by Khang at 12:30. Bobby streaked in at 12:44, with Ryan and Justin T. biting at his heels at 12:55 and 12:59. Moments later, Donald (13:05) and Jonathan burst through the finish, with Jonathan notching a 24-second PR for this course in 13:12. Rounding out our excellent day were Gary at 14:09, Joseph at 14:19, and William at 16:53. Miguel finished at 16th place overall and earned an individual medal!

The non-varsity runners have only one more meet in their season, and are primed for one more great day at our league championships on November 4th. Let's do it!

--Coach Marty

Women's Team

8 girl Hornets ran at the Moreau/Mariner invitational at Garin Park on Saturday Oct 15, 2011. The PSAT test always takes it toll on this race, so a number of sophomores and juniors were unable to attend, but due to strong performances by all the girls that did go, we were third in the large school F/S race and would have won the small school division as well. Sonia Xu continues to be a bright spot for us, winning the race in the best time of the day for all races run on the 2.1 mile course---13:14, 34 seconds faster than last year, Frosh Isabel Sullivan is running very well and came in 4th here in 14:31, Maria Sazo did what I asked of her and took more than thirty seconds off last year's time coming in 21st in 15:37 with frosh Tanna Sepp in 22nd at 15:38 in a run with a lot of heart, Rina Santos was super as the fifth girl for us in 29th and 16:09, Allison Pang continues to work up coming in at 17:13 for 46th, Sick Siu Yan ran right behind Allison in 47th, 17:14 and Rachel Gallegos was 68th in this 84 girl race (also beating the times of 37 girls in the small school division)---running 18:32. A good one-race meet that got everyone home early enough for a nap and still have time for afternoon fun.

League Meet #2 @ Berkeley (Cesar Chavez Park)
10/12/11

Women's Team

The Hornet cross-country team had it's second league meet today, the 12th of October, at Cesar Chavez park near the Berkeley marina. Running with a mixed team as some of the varsity girls did a workout rather than race in preparation for Mt SAC in a week and a half and after a great weekend in Fresno, the girls did very well. In the JV race, the girls won the event easily, while giving up some of their stronger runners to the varsity race today. Winning the race in a time of 14:51 was Montana Sepp a freshwoman who is doing well and will be counted on for the rest of the season and certainly next year, followed by junior Emma Fraser running in 3rd with a time of 15:29, a few Berkeley girls drifted in and then we ran 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th to settle the end result----Danica Liang 15:51, Nora Lam 15:55, Kirsten Hausmann 16:03, Allison Pang 16:36, and Siu Yan Cheng 16:38 took those positions. Running 14th in 17:41 was Doni Uyeno, 15th Zee Yaropa 17:42, and 17th Rachel Gallegos 17:50 out of the 31 girls race and running over a longer course there of 2.1 miles.

The varsity course today was 2.9 miles as there was work being done on some of the parks paths, we hope that will all be completed for the league championships on Nov 4th at the same venue. Rebeckah Vitucci took 5th for us in this race going 20:11 and Elise Yuen was 6th in 20:18, Tessa Russel-Harde ran in 11th 21:17, Jessica Alvarado was 14th in 21:46, Ana Santos ran 21:51 in 15th and her sister Rina Santos was 21st in her first varsity length race running 22:55 in the 27 girl race.

All of these girls did as I asked them to do and should be proud of their efforts, as am I.

@ Clovis Invitational (Fresno)
10/8/11

Women's Team

The AHS cross-country team returned to Fresno on Saturday the 8th of October to run in the Clovis invitational on the California state meet course. The all-time best time list has been drastically altered after this weekend's races. We took JV teams to the meet for the first time and were rewarded with excellent times and a great opportunity to continue to strengthen the program.

Running in the JV girls race were Isabel Sullivan, a freshwoman who is rushing forward with every race. Running a full length course of 3.1 miles for the first time on our team, she turned out a superb 21:13 time, winning a medal for 13th place out of 317 girls running the race and placing herself 26th on the all-time AHS record list for this race. Rebeckah Vitucci returning to the course after having run it in 2009, took a full 3minutes and 10 seconds off of her time from that race going 21:39 and landing herself in 35th on our all-time list and in 38th place in the race, Elise Yuen had another good day coming in 43rd in a time of 21:43, frosh Montana Sepp running in only her 2nd race in the last month ran 23:02 in 111th place in a very good showing at this venue, Tessa Russell-Harde was 139th in 23:25 and continues to learn and show progress, Maria Sazo ran 23:36 for 146th in her first outing here, and Emma Fraser was 160th in 23:51 in this huge race in warm weather and after a false start. Our Jv girls team is very strong and this team effort resulted in the 4th best team time ever at Clovis.

The varsity captured the very best team time for AHS at this race this year, beating out the team time of the 2005 state qualified team by 42 seconds. Winning medals at this large and prestigious event is a difficult task, and both Sonia Xu and Kelly Hosokawa should be very proud of the ones they garnered here. Sonia led the team with a super time of 19:52, becoming only the 6th girl to break 20 minutes for AHS at this race taking over the 3rd best spot on the list and running in 18th in the race, Kelly ran very well also going to the 8th place on our list and 29th in the race in a time of 20:16, Kelly continues to work hard and demonstrate a great work-ethic for the team, Co-captain and another hard worker, Lindsi Tu was third for the team on Saturday, running 20:45 for 54th place and tying for 15th on the AHS list, Close behind was the other co-captain, Irene Xu running in 58th for a time of 20:50 and 17th on the school list, Mariko Stenstedt was right behind her in a strong race running 20:53 for 64th and 18th on our list, Andie Nguyen keeping close to the pack came in 72nd in 21:00 and Polly Fong was 102nd in this high quality race running 21:42. There were 157 runners in this race, the top five runners for us were within 1 minute 1 second of each other in a good close pack---necessary if we are to advance at the NCS race in middle November. A great trip for us and well supported by parents and friends of the team---thank you all

men's Team

Varsity Cameron Tu is continuing to have an outstanding soph season, leading the XC team with a 16:24 time knocking 1:10 off his previous best to move up to 5th all-time list for this course.

Duc Nguyen also improved upon his State meet time by almost 20 seconds after missing a week of practice due to injury and moving up to 15th on the Hornets all-time list with a time of 16:48.

Michael Moler also would improve on his State meet time by 10 seconds at 17:24 to edge out Steven Carlson at 17:31. Note that Steven also missed a week due to flu and surely would have been under 17 min barrier.

Emmanuel Boquiren, Daniel Arnstein and Chris Parsons would finish in consecutive order at 18:11, 18:11, 18:12. I know these 3 young men will build and improve on their performance at MNT SAC.

JV The JV team had to not only contend with the heat at least 10 degrees hotter than the Varsity race but also contend with over 400 runners in the race.

Deepak Sharma would lead the boys with a breakout performance at 17:53, followed by another great effort by Andrew Liu at 18:11. Andrew just keeps moving up the depth chart. Next was Miguel Hidalgo who also had an outstanding effort. Miguel lost his shoe in the first mile, ran 2 miles at peak levels to finish at 18:15 with one shoe. Nick Liu would continue his outstanding season as one of the top JV runners at 18:40. Cameron Beene also keeps moving up the depth chart on the JV team at 19:14, followed by senior Nick Raber 19:14 and Conner Szeto at 20:08.

Great efforts by the JV team!

October means the Artichoke Invitational in Half Moon Bay and pumpkin patches along highway 92 getting to the meet. Expecting cold weather, we got clear skies and a visible horizon---not often seen at this race. Hornet cross-country girls continue to charge forward, establishing new record times at each meet. There were 573 girls running during the day in large and small school divisions and the hornets had 10 girls in the top 15%---24 girls ran altogether for AHS and 12 earned medals. 46 schools had enough runners to create a team scoring and Alameda was third overall in all the races combined and number one in the large school division.

In the Frosh/Soph race, Sonia Xu set the course record for the AHS team running 15:14 and taking 3rd in the race which we won handily, Mariko Stenstedt was 8th in the race at 15:58 followed by Andie Nguyen in 10th (16:30) Frosh Isabel Sullivan in 11th (16:34), Polly Fong 12th (16:38) and Elsie Yuen 13th (16:39) the team scoring 40 points to the nearest competitor's 74. Frosh Montana Sepp got back in action and was 7th for the team in 27th place (17:53), Danica Liang ran in 59th (19:07), Siu Yan came in on her aching ankle in 74th (19:46), Allison Pang continues to improve running 75th in 20:09, Doni Uyeno worked hard for 85th (20:48), Aziza Yaropa was 86th (20:51) and Rachel Gallegos came in 101st (21:35)----there were 122 runners in the race.

The varsity race was run next and Rebeckah Vitucci and Irene Xu missed it as they sat in traffic getting thru the pumpkin patches, after taking SATs, so only four girls ran the race---Kelly Hosokawa ran the second best time ever for our team at this meet taking 8th in 15:26 and improving from last year by 25 seconds, Lindsi Tu was 17th in 15:59 (only the 5th girl to break 16 minutes here for AHS) and improving from last year by 54 seconds---both earned medals. Newcomers Tessa Russell-Harde and Jessica Alvarado continue to learn the sport and ran in 61st (17:48) and 70th (18:49) respectively. There were 98 competitors in the varsity race.

The JV race was the last run of the day and Irene Xu and Rebeckah Vitucci went one/two in this race, arriving about 45 minutes before the run, Irene came in at 15:49 and Becka ran 16:37 for her second place medal, Emma Fraser edged out Ana Santos for 21st, but both ran the same time of 17:48, Maria Sazo came in 30th in 18:07 with surprising freshie Katharina Santos close behind in 31st---18:09, Nora Lam did well in this race, improving by 37 seconds running 18:54 in 40th place---there were 73 runners in the race.

Taking our best 5 times in all the races (15:14, 15:26, 15:49, 15:58, 15:59) we had a spread of 45 seconds between the five girls, all running under 16 minutes which led us to 3rd best overall here. We had a great day with some super runs and efforts from all the girls.

Frosh/Soph combined
The Frosh/Soph team would place 2nd. Led by Cameron Tu, who is having the finest soph season of any runner I have coached. Cameron won the RAM a week earlier and would win the Artichoke with a powerful final kick at 12:40. Followed by Andrew 15th 13:44; Miguel 22nd 13:58; freshman Khang 26th 14:05; fellow freshman Ryan 34th 14:20, to close out the top 5 scoring team at 93. @ RAM Invitational (Daly City)
9/24/11

Women's Team

AHS C/C teams went to Westmoor High in Daly City for the Ram invitational on Saturday Sept 24th. 22 girls ran in various races and 12 managed to win medals. The girls f/s team started the day for us by placing 2nd and winning medals for the team's first 7 runners, as well as a plaque for Sonia Xu who won the race in a best sophomore time ever of 15:43 and the 5th best time for the entire team at this meet to which we have been going for 20 years. 5th place in the race went to Mariko Stenstedt in a time of 16:26, Andie Nguyen came in 9th in 16:51, Elise Yuen was 10th in 16:57, Polly fong was 12th in 17:13 and all five of these girls made it onto the best ten list for sophomores at this race. Rina Santos continues to work hard and was 6th for the team in 19:11 (54th overall in the race) and Nica Liang was 7th for the team in 19:44 (63rd overall) to get the two other team medals. Siu YAn Cheng was 74th in 20:17, Allison Pang did well in 76th---20:23, Doni Uyeno was 93rd in 21:26, and Zee Yaropa ran in 94th---21:31---there were 126 girls in the race.

The JV race ran in the continuing mist of the day with Tessa Russel-Harde getting a medal in 14th place---17:53, Maria Sazo medaled in 20th---18:24, and Emma Fraser got our third medal in the race in 22nd---18:30, Ana Santos had a great race in 25th, just missing a medal in a time of 18:33, Kirs Hausmann did her best on this dreary day in 41st---19:20, and Nora Lam ran in 51st----20:12. There were 95 runners in this race.

The varsity race had a very strong field and since a number of our varsity runners ran in the f/s race we were at a disadvantage in the team competition. Had our entire var team run together we would have been in the top three of the teams there as our 5 best times would have packed in within 46 seconds of each other. In all the girl races there were 363 runners and we were 14th, 20th, 24th, 36th, and 41st overall---a very good showing. Kelly Hosokawa got onto the tough junior all-time list in third place and 7th all-time best time on the list running in 19th ---15:59, Irene Xu was 22nd in 16:05 getting to 4th best on the senior list and 9th overall best and won a medal, Lindsi Tu was 33rd in16:29 and 8th on the senior list, Rebeckah Vitucci did very well in 49th---16:55 and getting to 9th on the senior list and only the 24th girl in the twenty meets we have gone to there, to break 17 minutes, and Jessica Alvarado stood up for the team in only her 3rd race with us, running in 87th---18:09. There were 142 very talented runners in the varsity race. A good day in the fog and mist.

men's Team

The Freshmen continue to impress. Despite missing 2 of the top 7 runners, the results were outstanding. Four of the six boys would make the freshman all-time list. Leading the freshman team was Khang, 1st all-time at 14:34; followed by Ryan at 14:48, 2nd overall. Kevin and Justin T. would also make the all-time list at 4th and 5th, both at 15:00 min, followed by Justin W. at 16:13 and Yingjie at 16:47.

The Soph team would see 3 of 7 runners make the all-time list. At #1 is Cameron Tu at 13:05, followed by Andrew, 6th 14:08; Miguel 7th at 14:14. Outstanding efforts by these 3! Other great performances were Nathan 15:16; Jonathan 15:41; Naayl 17:10 and William at 18:23.

The JV team was led by Daniel at 14:07, followed by Cameron B. 14:36; Connor 14:43; Steven L. 15:03; Matt 15:11; Jordan 15:52; and Ken at 17:28.

The Varsity team would see 4 of 7 runners make the all-time list. Leading off was Steven Carlson, #1 all-time at 12:52; followed by Duc Nguyen, 4th all-time at 13:00. He was followed by Michael Moler 8th all-time at 13:32; all three just juniors. The lone senior to make the all-time list was Emmanuel Boquiren 8th at 13:33; followed by Chris Parsons 14:00; Deepak Sharma 14:01 and Nick Raber at 14:25.

What an outstanding day by the Boy’s team. Khang would win the Frosh race because he knew the course when 15 ahead of him went the wrong way. Cameron Tu would easily win the Soph race.

Outstanding efforts by all!

@ Lowell Invitational (Golden Gate Park)
9/17/11

Women's Team

The AHS cross-country team went to the Lowell invitational race in Golden Gate park on Sept 17th. The girls came away with the first varsity victory in an invitational meet in at least a decade. Lead by Sonia Xu in 8th (19:16) and Kelly Hosokawa in 11th (19:23) the first five girls for the team ran within 1 minute 9 seconds of each other---a pack that led to the victory over 16 other teams. Following the two leaders were co-captain Irene Xu (20th---19:46---a one minute improvement from 2010), co-captain Lindsi Tu (30th---20:13---taking over two minutes off of last years time at this race), Mariko Stenstedt (33rd---20:24), Andie Nguyen (36th---20:25---the pack would have been even closer had Andie not fallen during the race, easily losing at least 15 seconds), and Polly Fong (67th---21:18). There were 127 runners in the race. The varsity girls have some high aspirations this year and this is a great start to the invitational season.

In the frosh/soph race, Frosh Isabel Sullivan took 7th place running 15:47 in a great run, Soph Elise Yuen ran 42 seconds faster than last year on an aching foot for 17th place in 16:04, Frosh Katharina Santos had a breakout run taking 43rd in the race and was third for a strong AHS F/S contingent---16:59, Soph Maria Sazo came in 51st---17:09, Soph Kirsten Hausmann took 58 seconds off last years time running in 69th---17:32, Siu Yan Cheng and Allison Pang formed a bond running together both in 19:10 w/ Siu Yan getting the nod in 119th place and Allison 120th, Soph Doni Uyeno ran 19:39 24 seconds faster than last year for 132nd, Soph Aziza Yaropa was 141st in 19:59 and Frosh Rachel Gallegos continues to work hard and ran 21:42 for 154th out of the 173 runners in the race. The F/S girls were 7th out of 15 scoring teams.

The JV race was run on the longer varsity course and Sr Rebeckah Vitucci turned in a medal-winning time of 20:53 for 5th place (taking a minute 33 seconds off of last years time), newcomer Jr Jessica Alvarado continues to improve and have fun doing it, just missed a medal running 22nd in a time of 22:01, Jr Tessa Russell-Harde also in her first year of CC ran 22:26 for 30th, Jr Emma Fraser ran in 39th---22:45, Sr Ana Santos ran 23:38 for 62nd and Jr Nora Lam ran 24:29 for 82nd out of the 159 runners. The JV girls were 4th out of 14 teams scoring.

A good start to the invitational season---everyone is working hard and pushing the girls ahead of them to get better.

~ Coach Bruce

men's Team

With 47 schools at the Lowell Invite, this would be our first big test. In my 5th year as the boys’ coach, this was the best overall performance by all teams.

2.13 miles

The Frosh team would place 2nd team out of 20 teams with excellent pack running. Leading the Frosh team was Khang at 13:18; followed by Bobby 13:26; Ryan 13:29; Kevin 13:40; and Justin T. 13:45 -- a 27 sec spread 1-5 runners. The remaining Frosh were Donald 14:04; Pravash 14:21; Denver 14:37; Joseph 14:42 and Gary 15:36.

The Soph team placed 8th team out of 20 teams. Miguel would lead the Soph team with a time of 12:49; followed by Andrew 12:52; Nathan 14:05; Jonathan 14:12; Naayl 15:42 and William 16:24. Great effort by the Soph team!

The JV team would place 3rd out of 20 teams. Three of the top JV runners were racing for 3 spots on the Varsity team. Leading the way was Nick R. at 17:08; followed by Deepak 17:12; Nick L. 17:24; Cameron B. 18:03; Sterven L. 18:24; Jordan 20:20 and Ken 21:19. Most of all would PR on this 2.93 mile course.

The Varsity team showed why they are a legit team to challenge for a State meet berth in Div II at NCS. The varsity boys would place 4th out of about 20teams, against top teams from NCS, CCS, SJC. Steven Carlson, Duc Nguyen, and Cameron Tu would break 16 min for this course with times of 15:50; 15:52; and 15:58 respectively. They were followed by Michael Moler at 16:36 and Emmanuel Boquiren at 16:39 --- 1-5 team spread would be 49 sec. Chris Parsons continues to hold down a top 7 spot with an excellent time of 17:01; followed by Daniel Arnstein at 17:33.

This is a very young and talented team with 1 Soph and 5 Juniors in the top 10. I know that myself, and my assistant coaches Marty Beene and Nathan Brassmassery look forward to the rest of the XC season.

League Meet #1 @ Berkeley (Cesar Chavez Park)
9/9/11

Women's Team

The female hornets opened their official running season on Friday the 9th of September in the first ACCAL league meet at Cesar Chavez park in Berkeley. The young JV team won their race handily, while the varsity lost to Berkeley by one point.

For the JV team, Soph Amity Freese, in her first C/C race, ran the best time a JV has run that course taking first in 13:04, Soph Maria Sazo was third overall in 13:30, new runner Jr Jessica Alvarado was 4th in the race running 13:46, our other new Jr was Tessa Russell-Harde who was 5th in 13:58, Soph Kirsten Hausmann ran 6th in 14:30, Sr Ana Santos was 8th in 14:39, followed closely by Soph Danica Liang in 9th 14:41, and then Ana's freshwoman sister came in 10th running a tidy 14:55, about 3 and half minutes faster than in a recent scrimmage on the same course, Soph Holly Hong was 11th in 14:58, freshie Allison Pang was 15th running almost three minutes faster than in the scrimmage---15:33, Jr Nora Lam was 16th in 15:39, Sophomores Doni Uyeno and Siu Yan Cheng ran close together going 16:04 and 16:05 for 17th and 18th respectively, Smiling Soph Aziza Yaropa was 24th in 17:04 and Frosh Rachel Gallegos picked up over a minute from the scrimmage doing very well after only two weeks with us, in 27th running 17:26. There were 36 runners in the race.

The varsity race was well run and very informative to our team. Berkeley has two new freshwomen from Ethiopa who are strong competitors and they took the first two spots, our girls then started arriving---Jr Kelly Hosokawa and Soph Sonia Xu finished 3/4 in the same time of 20:29, followed by a Berkeley girl that we trained with this summer in 5th place, Andie Nguyen ran her best race ever beating her best time here from last year by 27 seconds for 6th, Sr captain Lindsi Tu continues to demonstrate what hard work can do running in 7th 21:26, a Berkeley freshie came in 8th with Soph Elise Yuen and our other Sr captain Irene Xu close behind (we will get past the Berker in the future) running 9th and 10th 21:53 and 21:54 respectively, then came Polly Fong in 11th 22:15, Frosh Montana Sepp 12th 22:16, Soph Mariko Stenstedt 13th in 22:18, Frosh Isabel Sullivan also in 22:18 for 14th (a very tight and competitive pack only three seconds apart), Sr Rebeckah Vitucci pushed into 16th in 23:01 and Jr Emma Fraser was 19th in 23:48. There were 34 competitors in the varsity race and the times are skewed as the whole race was mistakenly run on a course longer than normal---in general the times posted above would be 18 to 22 seconds faster on the proper course. A good start to the season and very instructive as we continue to work towards the strongest season ever at AHS.

~ Coach Bruce

Men's Team

Varsity: Alameda 25, Berkeley 31
Despite missing 2 of he top 5 varsity team runners, the boys had enough depth to pull out a victory over Berkeley. Placing 5 runners in the top 10 with a mix of PRs and new varsity runners moving up the depth chart.

Leading off 1st overall was Cameron Tu with a new PR of 16:59, followed by Stephen Carlson 2nd, 17:03 (PR); Emmanuel Boquiren 6th 17:56; Michael Moler 7th 18:05; Chris Parsons 9th 18:21; Deepak Sharma 12th 18:27; Nick Liu 14th 18:44 (PR); Miguel 15th 18:46; Andrew Liu 17th 18:51; Cameron Beene 20th 19:22; Nick Raber 25th 19:50; and Connor Szeto 26th 19:59. @ Scrimmage vs. Berkeley (Cesar Chavez Park)
8/26/11

Women's Team

The Cross-Country season got started on Friday the 26 of August with a scrimmage with Berkeley High at Cesar Chavez Park in Berk. It will be the course that we will run all of our league meets on. To teach the newbies and remind the veterans about racing , all of the runners ran the shorter JV course. Our best time last year for the JV course was 13:13, this year we started well (especially for August): Junior Kelly Hosokawa ran 12:17.9, soph Sonia Xu came in at 12:18, Senior captain Irene Xu ran 12:44, soph Mariko Stenstedt 12:57, soph Polly Fong 13:08, soph Elise Yuen 13:14, new-comer frosh Isabel Sullivan did very well in 13:26, fr Montana Sepp brings the Sepp family back to the team (brother Brandon ran a couple of years ago) running 13:55, soph Maria Sazo came in at 14:30, newbie soph Amity Freese got her season started running 14:54, soph Danica Liang coming from the sprint team in track ran a nice 15:47. then three frosh girls in their first ever races and having been with the team a very short time ran together: Allison Pang 18:28, Katharina Santos 18:28.2 and Rachel Gallegos after one day of being with the team ran 18:33; Aziza Yaropa, a sophomore, and nursing a sore ankle ran 18:39 with the the three freshies.

A good, educational start to the season!!

Men's Team

After a long summer of base training, the boys' team showed very well in all divisions: Frosh/Soph, JV and Varsity.

Starting with the F/S and J/V race, the F/S team showed outstanding pack running. Leading the way was Miguel at 11:29 for 3,000 meters, followed by the following freshmen: placing in the top 15 places were Ryan 11:31; Khang 11:46; Kevin 11:48; Donald 11:50; Bobby 12:06; Justin T. 12:28; Soph Nathan 12:41; more Frosh Justin W. 12:51; Denver 13:01; Pravash 13:11 and Soph William 16:20. JV runners Steven L. 11:52; Jordan 13:09 and Ken 14:16.

Overall, although no scoring was kept due to this being a scrimmage, the F/S, JV team captured about 7 of the the top 10 places. Great pack running!

In the Varsity race, Alameda captured the first 3 places with Steven and Duc tying for 1st at 9:58; followed by Daniel at 10:09. The rest of the Varsity placed in the top 15 spots as follows: Nick R. 10:27; Michael 10:32; Chris P. 10:42; Andrew l. 10:48; Deepak 10:53; Nick L. 11:00; and Cameron B. 11:17.

What an outstanding effort by all three divisions. I can see all the training over the summer paying dividends as we start our 2011 XC season.
