vs. San Ramon
2/11/2012

Hornets 30, Wolves 32

In perhaps their final game of the season, Alameda played their best half of basketball at the Hornet's Nest on Saturday, February 11, but came up on the short end of a 32 to 30 score against San Ramon Valley.

The Lady Wolves took a 10 to 4 first period lead. The Lady Hornets again got off to a slow start and San Ramon extended their lead to 18 to 7 at the break despite a trey and a deuce from a hobbled Mei Lui Owens. Alameda began their second half comeback keyed by improved defense. But Alameda continued to trail 27 to 17 as the fourth stanza began. The Lady Hornet third period scoring came on two 3's by Owens and a basket apiece by Allison Ishida and Vivian Huynh.

Alameda staged a strong fourth quarter rally. Owens hit her fourth and fifth trey of the game, Jada Pampo and Samantha Hugger chipped in a basket each while Huynh and Cecilia Nava contributed a free throw. Although outscoring the Lady Wolves 13 to 5 the rally fell short by a bucket.

Owens led the scoring with 17 points, Huynh added 4 points, Pampo contributed 3 points and Hugger, Nava and Ishida each scored 2 points.

Alameda is scheduled to play Castro Valley on Tuesday at 4 PM but that game is questionable due to coaching issues at Castro Valley.

Hornets 5, Yellowjackets 49

The Lady Yellowjackets came out strong, leaping to a 12 to 0 first period score en route to a 49 to 5 victory at Berkeley on Friday, January 27. Berkeley extended the lead to 28 to 3 at halftime. The Lady Hornet's scoring came from a basket and free throw by Jada Pampo.

Berkeley continued the assault in the third quarter with an 11 to 2 edge as Samantha Hugger hit a deuce for the Alameda score, then rang up a 10 to 0 fourth stanza for the win.

Pampo's 3 points and Hugger's 2 points led Alameda. The team played without Point Guard Mei Liu Owens (injury) and rebounder and scorer Georgia Harris (eligibility).

The team takes a week break before facing Castro Valley High School at the Hornet's Nest on Tuesday, February 7 at 4 PM on Parent's Night. The ceremony follows the game at about 5:30 PM.

vs. Salesian
1/24/2012

Hornets 19, Pride 45

The game started slow in this first couple of minutes, before the Pride took inside advantage jumping to a 15 to 1 first period lead en route to a 45 to 19 decision at the Hornet's Nest on Tuesday, January 24. Salesian extended the lead to 25 to 4 at halftime, all of the Lady Hornet's scores being free throws, one each from Mei Liu Owens, Maya Fuller, Ariel Mak and Osna Sharifi.

Owens hit the first of her two treys in the third quarter, Cecilia Nava and Georgia Harris added two free throws each and Samantha Hugger contributed a free throw as Alameda took an 8 to 7 third period edge. The Pride rebounded with a fourth stanza 13 to 7 advantage to seal the victory.

Owens led the scoring with 7 points, Sharifi added 3 points, Harris, Nava and Priscilla Tu hit for two points each while Hugger, Fuller and Mak each recorded one point.

It is a busy week for the Lady Hornets as they face St. Mary's-Berkeley on Thursday and Berkeley on Friday. Despite the lack of wins, the team continues to develop and show a positive attitude. It is interesting to note that the team, albeit at the freshman level, has faced 5 of the top 8 rated girl's basketball programs in the greater Bay Area in the latest SF Chron ratings.

- Special Olympics Clinic

Hornets 22, Giants 34

The Redwood Giants traveled to Alameda and registered their second win over the Lady Hornets, albeit by a lesser margin, 34 to 22 on Saturday, January 15 at the Hornet's Nest.

Alameda fell behind early, but showed stamina in the fourth quarter. Redwood took a 15 to 3 first period lead and extended that to a 23 to 11 edge at the break. The Giants pitched a shutout third stanza for a 28 to 11 lead entering the fourth quarter. Behind the scoring of Mei Lui Owens (4 points) and Vivian Huynh (7 points), Alameda held an 11 to 6 advantage in the quarter but came up short in the end.

Huynh led the scoring with 7 points, Owens chippd in 6 points, Osna Sharifi added 4 points, Jada Pampo and Samantha Hugger each contributed 2 points and Cecilia Nava rounded out the scoring with a free throw.

Hornets 26, Pride 61

Alameda traveled to Salesian High School on Wednesday, January 11 to face the Salesian Pride. Salesian jumped out to a quick 13 to 1 first period lead, enroute to a 61 to 26 victory, by controling the boards and scoring freely inside. Alameda tighten their defense in the second period but trailed 23 to 8 at the break. After a couple of quick Pride baskets to open the third stanza, the Lady Hornet's changed out of their two-three zone to a full court person-to-person defense. The up-tempo game resulted in several quick turnovers and a slight rally. Unfortunately poor transition from offense to defense ultimately gave the Pride a number of uncontested baskets and a 17 to 10 third period advantage. Down 40 to 18 entering the final quarter, Alameda stayed with the press to enable the players to experience the up-tempo game and work on defensive transition.

Salesian started the game in a person-to-person defense but played a "soft" two-three zone most of the game. This enabled the point guard and wings open shots and Alameda had a good shooting game in terms of the number of shots. Jada Pampo, Samantha Hugger, Valarie Chui, Priscilla Tu, Vivian Huynh, Maya Fuller and Osna Sharifi each had good shot opportunities and Mei Lui Owens took advantage of open shots from the top of the key. Owens led the scoring with 11 points, Huynh had 5 points, Pampo, Hugger, Tu and Sharifi each scored two points. Allison Ishida scored a basket off an excellent in bounds play. Cecilia Nava, Ariel Mak and Angel Shadd played well inside.

vs. Castro Valley

Hornets 21, Trojans 37

Playing back-to-back road games, the Lady Hornet's got off to a good start, taking a 7 to 4 first period lead. Unfortunately a quick series of events in the second quarter gave the Lady Trojan's an 8 to 7 lead that they never relinquished and registered a 37 to 21 victory. Trailing 12 to 9 at the break, Castro Valley took a 25 to 12 second half edge in scoring.

Point guards Mei Lui Owens and Jada Pampo led the scoring with 5 points each on a trey and deuce apiece. Georgia Harris scored a bucket and two free throws for 4 fourth period scores before twisting an ankle. Vivian Huynh hit a trey in the third period for her 3 point game and Samantha Hugger and Osna Sharifi each registered 2 points. Allison Ishida, Angel Shadd and Cecilia Nava each played well inside although not scoring. Valarie Chiu, Priscilla Tu, Ariel Mak and Maya Fuller played valuable minutes as reserves and continued to show improvement.

Alameda is back on the road to the Salesian Pride on Wednesday.

vs. Carondelet

Hornets 1, Cougars 49

Alameda ventured again to Concord and came home with similar results. Carondelet nearly hung a big goose egg on the Lady Hornet's, whose only offense was a free throw by Samantha Hugger, as they rang up a 49 to 1 victory. Despite the lopsided score, Alameda played very hard and never let the score adversely affect their effort.

vs. Berkeley
1/3/2012

Hornets 17, Yellowjackets 44

Alameda opened what is an abbreviated league play at the Freshmen level (only Alameda and Berkeley field teams) on Tuesday, January 3 at the Hornet's Nest with a hard fought, but decisive 44 to 17 loss to a very athletic Yellowjacket five.

Alameda took an early lead and played fairly even during most of the first quarter but a late Berkeley rally gave them a 15 to 6 first period advantage. Samantha Hugger with 4 point and Georgia Harris with a basket provided the Lady Hornet's offence. Berkeley added on to the lead with a 13 to 4 second quarter run. Harris and Cecilia Nave provided the Alameda scoring each with a basket. Berkeley was sparked by the excellent outside shooting of a guard with a pair of treys and 3 deuces for 12 points and a team free throw total of 6 off of 9 Alameda team fouls.

Harris provided all the offence in the third stanza and played a strong inside game but Berkeley prevailed 6 to 5 in that period for a 34 to 15 lead. Because the game was started late due to transportation problems, a running clock was employed for the fourth quarter as Berkeley again topped the scoring 10 to 2 for the final score of 44 to 17. Nava scored Alameda's lone basket.

Harris led the scoring with 9 points and Hugger and Nava each contributed 4 points.

@ St. Joseph Tournament - Pilot Classic
12/26-28/2011

The Alameda High School Lady Hornet Freshmen team participated in the Pilot Classic on December 28-30. Despite continued improvement, they finished in eighth place, losing to Encinal High School

Alameda 14, Indians 26
12/28/11

Alameda was unable to get the offense on track but only trailed 4 to 1 after the first period. A trey by Valarie Chiu provided the second quarter scoring but the lady Hornets trailed 10 to 4 at halftime. Mei Liu Owens provided all 5 third stanza points and Alameda trailed 20 to 9 entering the final period. Owens added 4 more fourth period points as the teams played to a 6 to 5 Tamalpais advantage, ending in their 26 to 14 victory.

Owens led the scoring with 9 points, Chiu added 3 points and Samantha Hugger and Ceilia Nava each contributed a free throw.

(2) Alameda 10, Titans 45
12/29/11

Hercules took a 12 to 1 first period lead and extended their advantage to 20 to 6 at the break. A 14 to 0 scoring edge in the third period sealed the deal and Hercules came away with a 45 to 10 victory to put them into the Consolation Game.

Owens led the scoring with 5 points, Hugger and Chiu each hit for 2 points and Nava had a free throw.

(3) Alameda 19, Jets 31
12/30/11

Alameda took an early advantage with buckets by Nava and Allison Ishida, plus two free throws by Ishida and one by Osna Sharifi to lead 7 to 5 after the first period. Unfortunately, the Lady Hornets were not able to defend a taller post player and trailed 15 to 9 at the break. Encinal's ability to score from the post doomed Alameda as the Jet's had an 11 to 6 third quarter advantage to lead 26 to 15 after the third period. Alameda's aggressive play put them into double bonus in the final stanza but were unable to register a field goal despite some good opportunities and scored their 4 points off free throws for the final 31 to 19 score.

Owens led the scoring with 9 points, Ishida hit for 4 points, Sharifi and Nava each registered 2 points and Vivian Huynh and Priscilla Tu each scored a free throw.

Hornets 6, Cougars 60

Alameda controlled the opening tip off and Vivian Huynh sank the field goal to give Alameda a quick 2 to 0 lead. Unfortunately the Cougars scored the next 25 points to lead 25 to 2 at the end of the first period. They extended the lead to 31 to 2 at halftime. A 13 to 2 third period put the game into "mercy" mode in the fourth stanza and Carondelet recorded a 60 to 6 victory in Concord on Friday, December 16.

Huynh led the scoring with 4 points and Jada Pampo scored a third period field goal. Despite the score, Mei Lui Owens and Pampo played well as point guards, Cecilia Nava, Allison Ishida and Angel Shadd's inside play, Samantha Hugger's excellent defense and Valarie Chiu, Pricilla Tu, and Maya Fuller's aggressive play give Alameda a team that continues to show progress. Alameda played without Georgia Harris who is injured and Ariel Mak who is on vacation with her family

Hornets 13, Pirates 43

Pittsburgh took an early lead and despite an energetic effort by the second unit, led 12 to 1 after the first period. Sparked by a pair of baskets by Georgia Harris and one by Vivian Huynh, the Lady Hornets showed some life in the second period but trailed 19 to 7 at the break. Pittsburgh put the game away with a 19 to 0 third period. Despite baskets by Huynh, Allison Ishida and Mei Lui Owens, and a 6 to 5 fourth quarter advantage, Pittsburgh registered the victory.

Huynh and Harris' 4 points, Ishida and Owens 2 points and a free throw by Cecilia Nava was the Alameda scoring.

vs. San Ramon Valley
12/12/2011

Hornets 23, Wolves 37

Alameda ventured to San Ramon Valley on Monday, December 12 to face the Wolves of San Ramon Valley. Alameda got off to a slow start, falling behind 6 to 0 and could never quite catch up, losing 37 to 23.

The Wolves continued their press and extended their lead to 19 to 8 at the break. Valarie Chiu's trey and a Georgia Harris free throw provided Alameda's offense.

Alameda came out more aggressive in the third period and outscored San Ramon Valley 8 to 5 and cut the lead to 6 points during their run. A pair of baskets by Mei Lui Owens and a basket and two free throws by Harris sparked the lady hornets. The Wolves still held a 24 to 16 advantage entering the final stanza. San Ramon ramped it up, outscoring Alameda 13 to 7 in the fourth quarter for the final score. Hugger's trey and two free throws by Maya Fuller and one each from Ishida and Harris lead the scoring.

Harris with 6 points, Hugger with 5 points, Owens with 4 points, Ishida and Chui with 3 points each and Fuller with 2 points provided Alameda with their 23 points. vs. Redwood
12/10/2011

Hornets 14, Giants 45

The Lady Hornets traveled to Redwood High School in Larkspur and came away on the short end of a 45 to 14 score.

The Giants jumped to a quick 6 to 0 lead, but Alameda fought back to trail 8 to 6 on baskets by Vivian Huynh, Allison Ishida and Mei Lui Owens. Redwood came back with three buckets of their own to lead 14 to 6 at the end of the first period, The Giant dominated the second stanza 10 to 4 despite brief rallies by the Lady Hornets, shooting bonus and double bonus free throws. Unable to score a basket during that period, Huynh dropped in three of four free throw and Owens added a free throw for the Alameda offense.

Leading 24 to 10 at the break, Redwood sealed the game with a 14 to 4 third period advantage. Jada Pampo and Samantha Hugger each scored a basket for the lady Hornets in that period. Redwood shutout Alameda 7 zip in the final stanza.

Alameda showed continuing signs of improvement, but committed too many turnovers, didn't box out and missed a number of good scoring opportunities.

Huynh paced the scoring with 5 points, Owens added 3 and Hugger and Pampo each contributed 2 points.
