NCS Round #2 vs. Montgomery
February 26
Hornets 55, Montgomery 58
Alameda High's longtime dreams of a berth in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State Championship series came to an end as guard Ananda Gebreyesus' desperation half court heave banked off the glass, hit the rim and bounced off as time expired.in Santa Rosa as the fifth seeded North Bay League champion Montgomery High Vikings upset fourth seeded Alameda 58-55 in the second round of the CIF North Coast Section II playoffs. Despite a poor first half, the Hornets led for most of the game until the decisive fourth quarter when the lead changed hands numerous times in this exciting playoff contest.
Outside of the Alameda-Contra Costa Athletic League (ACCAL) Most Valuable Player Khyra Conerly's slashing and spinning drives to the hoop and explosive offensive rebounding, Alameda relies on deadly three point shooting and turnovers created by their full court zone press and eleven player rotation. Starting at power forward, Conerly did her part with a team-high 18 points, including 5 points in the critical fourth quarter. However, the Hornets were extremely fortunate to lead 27-18 at half time despite missing all 16 three point shots Alameda High took in the first half. Had visiting Alameda made even two of their 16 threes in the first half, the outcome of this three point game might have been different.
The Viking 2-3 zone was the perfect antidote for the high-flying up-tempo Hornet attack because it caused the Alameda sharpshooters to rush their failed three point attempts throughout the first half. By the time the Alameda offense became more deliberate in the passing game and in shot selection in the second half, it was too late and the Hornets missed an opportunity to put Montgomery High into a big hole by halftime. Although the Hornets led at halftime, those missed opportunities in the first half would come back to haunt Alameda at the end of the game as they allowed the Vikings to stay in the hunt and ultimately win the game.
Furthermore, despite the fact that the Hornets gave the Vikings all they could handle with the zone press in the second quarter, the full court press did not lead to any transition buckets for the Hornets and was not a significant factor in the second half.
In addition, the Vikings were in the bonus with 1:23 left in the second quarter and in the double bonus shooting two free throws for every foul with 6:39 left in the game. As a result, the Vikings made practically all of their free throws all night and when they missed, they often were able to grab an offensive rebound and put the ball back in the basket. The 20-5 foul differential in favor of Montgomery High through four quarters was an unfortunate and unexpected result of Alameda's aggressive baseline to baseline defense and was yet another hurdle that the veteran Hornets could not overcome.
Finally, although Alameda's aggressive half court man defense prevent the Vikings from hitting outside shots, the Hornets had no real answer for the mobile big players for Montgomery High as they controlled the boards and scored inside for the Vikings in the second half.
ACCAL first team center Chiarra Duncan went out in the third quarter with a sprain to her already injured right knee and had to be helped off the court. North Coast trainers expertly re-taped her knee and Duncan was courageously able to return and play well under the boards as she ended with 13 points, including 4 in the fourth quarter. ACCAL first team point guard Ananda Gebreyesus performed well at point guard and in crunch time in the fourth quarter, and scored 6 points to help build Alameda's lead in the second quarter.
Swingman Debbie Gee got the start at the two guard position and scored a critical 5 points, including a big three pointer, in the decisive fourth quarter from the small forward slot when Alameda's season came down to the wire, while playing excellent team defense and recording many assists throughout the game. ACCAL second team guard Courtney Cheng moved to small forward at the start of the game and helped Alameda jump out to a first quarter lead with her basket mid-way in the first.
Angelica Rivera came off the bench and scored 5 points from the two guard position, including 3 in fourth quarter as she earned Coach Brad Thomas' confidence with playing time during the last critical minutes in the fourth. Guard Ce Ce Nguyen also scored 5 points for the Hornets in a reserve role as she received ACCAL all-league honorable mention honors.
Power forward Britney Walker had a fabulous second half shot block but could not score for the Hornets. Sophomore Kelsey McKeon played hard in the pivot coming off the bench for Alameda but was also unable to score. Center Marie Bertholdt was unable to play significant minutes in the paint for the Hornets because of foul trouble throughout the game, scoring only one second quarter free throw. Both McKeon and Bertholdt were recognized this week with ACCAL all-team honorable mention honors. Sophomore Allison Takagaki also logged minutes for the Hornets at point guard and gained valuable playoff experience for the future.
The Hornets, led by captains Khyra Conerly, Ananda Gebreyesus, Debbie Gee, and Allison Takagaki, finish the season with a fine 18-11 record and in second place in the ACCAL. Over the past two seasons, Alameda High made it to the second round of the North Coast playoffs - an accomplishment that the team can be proud of as they look back at the entire campaign.
Although seniors Khrya Conerly, Chiarra Duncan, Ananda Gebreyesus, Debbie Gee, Courtney Chang, Britney Walker, and Hillary Freeman will look back in disappointment at this final high school playoff game, they will share the unique and satisfying experience of being on a high school varsity playoff basketball team for the rest of their lives. At the same time, juniors Angelica Rivera, Ce Ce Nguyen, Alicia Fong, and Monica Lim look forward next year to finishing what they started on the varsity team this year. Sophomores Allison Takagaki and Kelsey McKeon and freshman Marie Bertholdt gained irreplaceable playoff experience as they will lead the Alameda High School Hornets for years to come.

NCS Round #1 vs. Concord
February 23
Hornets 76, Concord 48
Alameda High came charging onto the floor and swept the 13th ranked Concord High Minutemen away in a barrage of steals and three pointers as they won their opening round game in the California Interscholastic Federation North Coast Section Division Two playoffs 76-48. The fourth ranked Hornets jumped out to a 12 point first quarter lead and then finished the first half with a stunning 41 points and a 25 point lead. The Minutemen could not handle the swarm of Hornets coming at them with their full court press in the second quarter as Alameda went with a ten player rotation that exhausted the visiting Concord team.
Forward Khyra Conerly led the Hornets to victory with 12 points, scoring both inside and out, as well as pulling down numerous rebounds. Senior Britney Walker got the start and contributed 4 points while center Kelsey McKeon added 8 points from the pivot. Starting guards Ananda Gebreyesus and Courtney Chang each had 2 points in the Hornet win.
However, full credit for this win goes to the Alameda bench as guard Ce Ce Nguyen scored a team high 15 points, including 11 points in the first quarter alone that demoralized the Minutemen. Senior Debbie Gee had a great all-around game as she scored 12 points, including 10 points in the first half, from both the three point line and off of offensive rebounds, and had numerous assists for Alameda.. Guard Angelica Rivera had a fine game as she scored 10 points on daring drives to the basket..
Center Chiarra Duncan came off the bench and scored 3 points and provided the Hornets with a physical presence under the boards. Freshman Maire Bertholdt battled hard under the glass and scored 4 points while guard Alicia Fong got extended playing time and contributed 4 fourth quarter points. Guards Hillary Freeman and Monica Lim also played well but were unable to score.
The Hornets now advance to the second round of the playoffs as they face North Bay League champion Montgomery High. Although the Vikings are ranked fifth in the divisional playoffs, they will be a real challenge for the fourth ranked Hornets as they journey to Santa Rosa for their second post-season game.

Hornets 62, Oilers 14
The Hornets finished the regular season going 8-2 in league play as they dominated the Oilers 62-14 at Alameda High's Senior Night honoring the seven senior Hornets on the roster. Four year varsity point guard senior Ananda "Nandi" Gebreyesus had a great night distributing the ball and added 6 points for the Hornets. Four year varsity forward senior Khyra Conerly contributed 6 points in limited play as the Hornets opened up a 20-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. Second year varsity senior guard Courtney "Court" Chang added 2 first quarter points for the victorious Hornets. Second year varsity senior Hillary "Hill" Freeman got the start on Senior Night at forward or Alameda and played significant minutes throughout the game but was unable to get into the scoring column.

Sophomore Allison "Tak" Takagaki once again handled the point guard duties for Alameda High and added 2 points to the total for the Hornets.

The experienced Hornet team finished the regular season going 17-10 overall and are hopeful for a berth in the 2010 North Coast Section Divisional playoffs.
As the senior-dominated Hornet squad looks forward to a strong finish to their high school basketball career in the upcoming playoffs, the seeds for a successful team next season have been planted and are ready to sprout. Freshman center Marie Bertholdt could be the focus of the 2010-2011 Hornet offense with her ability to score inside on offense, and block shots and rebound at the defensive end. Point guard duties should be easily handled by sophomore Allison Takagaki who can drive and shoot from outside, as well as direct the offense. The Hornets look forward to seeing junior Ce Ce Nguyen step up next season as the starting two guard as she continues to become a huge scoring threat with speed to burn on defense. Sophomore power forward Kelsey McKeon could have a big 2010-2011 campaign grabbing offensive rebounds from the weak side and providing the Hornets with a much needed physical presence around the basket. Junior Angelica Rivera will push hard for minutes at point guard as she continues to demonstrate an ability to shoot outside and drive to the rim. Juniors Alicia Fong and Monica Lim look to take the next step and contribute big minutes to the Hornets at the shooting guard position. Regardless of what happens in the playoffs this year, the young Hornets are already excited about their prospects for next season.

February 16
Hornets 72, Spartans 38
It was no contest at Pinole Valley High as the Hornets dominated the Spartans in every aspect of the game from the opening tip and on to win 72-38 in league action. Pinole Valley played hard, but had no answer for the multi-faceted attack inside and out by Alameda High.
Senior Khyra Conerly led the Hornets again with 17 effortless points while point guard Ananda Gebreyesus opened up offensively with 10 points. Forward Chiarra Duncan had 9 points inside for Alameda and center Kelsey McKeon contributed 4 points. Senior Courtney Chang had 2 points for the veteran Hornets.

Sophomore Allison Takagaki had a free throw and guards Hillary Freeman, Monica Lim, and Alicia Fong got off the bench and had substantial playing time but were unable to score.
With the cancellation of a third game against Berkeley, Alameda High is now 16-10 overall and 7-2 in league play with second place firmly in the control of the Hornets. The Hornets look forward to the regular season finale on Senior Night against Richmond High, and to the North Coast Sectional playoffs.

Veteran leadership from fourth year varsity players Khyra Conerly and Ananda Gebreyesus and third year varsity players Chiarra Duncan and Debbie Gee should be particularly helpful in the pressure-packed NCS playoffs. The Hornets also have seniors Courtney Chang, Britney Walker, and Hillary Freeman on the roster who experienced the intense playoff atmosphere last season as Alameda advanced to the second round before finishing the season. The playoffs are where the seven seniors on the Hornet squad could provide Alameda with an advantage over their opponents.

vs. Encinal
February 6
Hornets 80, Jets 56
Alameda ended two years of frustration with its decisive defeat of cross-town rival Encinal High 80-56 in a non-league battle. The Hornets broke open a close game and opened up a ten point lead by the end of the third quarter before putting away the shorthanded Jets in the fourth.
Senior guard Courtney Chang led Alameda High with a career high 20 points and played excellent defense against one of Encinal's top scorers in a breakout game for Chang. Khyra Conerly helped end Alameda's two year losing streak against the Jets with 11 points, including 5 in the fourth quarter while avoiding foul trouble. Power forward Chiarra Duncan dominated the glass in the second half with 8 points. Duncan had 10 points overall for the evening, Center Kelsey McKeon had 4 points and point guard Ananda Gebreyesus ran the Hornet offense but was unable to score in the annual Big Game at the Hornet's Nest.
Center Marie Bertholdt was yet again, a strong physical presence around the basket for the Hornet. Encinal had no answer for Bertholdt who finished with 15 points off the bench. Guard Ce Ce Nguyen is becoming an instant offense option for Alameda with her three point shooting. Nguyen scored 13 points for the Hornets as a reserve. .
Angelica Rivera added 4 fourth quarter points, while Allison Takagaki contributed 3 points to the winning cause. Debbie Gee was a steadying influence for the Hornets in the momentum-changing third quarter and finished with 2 points despite being questionable for the game with a shoulder strain from the night before. Britney Walker matched up well defensively against one of the Jets' top scorers and ended with 2 points.
Reserves Hillary Freeman, Alicia Fong, and Monica Lim all came off the bench to finish off the Jets for the victorious Hornets in the fourth quarter. Alameda remains 5-2 in league play, but improved their overall season record to 14-10. The defeat of arch-rival Encinal after two consecutive losses to the Jets over the past two years was a big step forward for Alameda High's program and should be a real confidence builder for the coming contest next week with second ranked Berkeley High.
The Alameda backcourt is beginning to assert itself as the season progresses for the Hornets. Point guard Ananda Gebreyesus's ability to handle the press has proven to be irreplaceable for Alameda and she has also shown flashes of scoring ability inside and out while being a reliable defender. Senior guard Debbie Gee's experience on the court shows with her steady, dependable play, fine outside shooting, surprising offensive rebounding, an excellent assist to minutes ratio, and superb team defense.
Sophomore Allison Takagaki has shown that she is the Hornet point guard of the future as well as demonstrating an ability to take advantage of a defense and drive to the hoop. Jujnior Angelica Rivera can also handle the ball and not only can she shoot the three, but she is fearless in driving to the rack.
The Hornets have extraordinary depth at the shooting guard position with junior Ce Ce Nguyen and senior Courtney Cheng. Nguyen is a fearless three point shooter and is able to use her tremendous quickness and speed to defend the opposition. Cheng is beginning to step up as she has earned an increased amount of playing time by using her height on defense and taking full advantage of scoring opportunities both at the three point line and inside.
Swingman Hillary Freeman's tough defense and intimidating wingspan help her play both guard and forward positions for Alameda. Her willingness to shoot the three and surprising rebounding ability is an asset to the Hornets.
The Hornet future next season may lie with junior guards Alicia Fong and Monica Lim as Fong has demonstrated a fine outside shot while Lim plays with intensity in the deep backcourt for Alameda.

February 5
Hornets 54, Titans 34
Alameda defeated Hercules High 54-34 in a surprisingly close league contest at the Hornet's Nest. Despite suiting up only seven players and facing a taller Hornet team, the Titans more than held their own under the boards and moved the ball around for a number of open three point shots. The concern in the home crowd was palpable as the Titans jumped out to a 5 point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Hornets were able to battle back in the second quarter and led at halftime by a single point. Alameda High took control of the game in the third quarter with a more aggressive full court press and ended the quarter with a 9 point lead before putting the upstart Titans away in the fourth quarter.
Khyra Conerly kept things together for the Hornets with 9 points while power forward Chiarra Duncan asserted herself in the second half with 10 points overall. Guard Courtney Cheng played a complete game in one of her better outings this season and finished with 7 points. Center Kelsey McKeon added 6 points to the Alameda total while guard Ananda Gebreyesus handled the ball with great dexterity for the Hornets but was unable to score.

Sophomore Allison Takagaki added 2 points for the Hornets in the victory. Forward Britney Walker played but did not score, and guard Debbie Gee played well in the crucial third quarter push for Alameda High but also did not score as she was forced to leave the game after re-injuring her left shoulder during a steal.
With the game safely in hand late in the fourth quarter, guards Hillary Freeman, Alicia Fong, and Monica Lim were able to get off the bench and grab some valuable playing time.
Alameda High improved their league record to 5-2 with this victory and are now 13-10 overall with close losses to Berkeley, ranked the second best team in the Bay Area, and to eighth ranked Dublin. They look forward to playing their cross-town rival Encinal and a third match up with the dangerous Berkeley Yellow Jackets.
As the Hornets come down the stretch to finish the season, it is becoming increasing clear that superstar forward Khyra Conerly's ability to attack the basket is the focal point of the Alameda offense. Her powerful dribble drives, spin moves, and explosive leaping ability, get her to the basket and creates other opportunities for front court players such as Chiarra Duncan who is demonstrating a smooth offensive game at the low block and good rebounding ability. Freshman Marie Bertholdt is making a strong bid for more playing time as she shows off her height and shot blocking ability with a very tough physical presence under the boards to go with excellent footwork and a soft pair of hands.
Sophomore Kelsey McKeon is showing an ability to score with an effective jump hook from five feet while forward Britney Walker is able to contribute to the Hornet cause at both ends of the floor with her exceptional speed and leaping ability.

vs. Berkeley
January 29
Hornets 53, Yellowjackets 69
The Hornets fell apart in the fourth quarter as defending league champion Berkeley defeated Alameda for the second time this season, 69-53. Alameda High cut the lead to 2 points with 1:30 left in the third quarter before Berkeley went on a 25-12 run to crush the Hornets. Alameda went on a nice run with about 6 minutes left in the game before faltering due to an unusual number of unforced turnovers, a weak defense, and an inability to rebound.
The Hornets were down only 4 points at the end of the first quarter and down only 2 points at halftime. Their third quarter run was due in part to tough rebounding and defensive work by center Marie Bertholdt, and a scrambling pressure defense that finally got to the ranked Yellow Jackets.
Forward Khrya Conerly singlehandedly tried to get Alameda back into the game by scoring 9 of the team's 12 fourth quarter points with slashing drives to the basket both on the break and in the half court offense. Conerly ended the game with a team high 22 points. Ananda Gebreyesus clearly demonstrated her importance to the team at point guard by her ability to beat the press and added 8 important points for the Hornets. Forward Chiarra Duncan had 6 first quarter points, including a 3 point basket. Center Kelsey McKeon added 3 points for Alameda. Guard Courtney Cheng defended Berkeley's star player but was unable to score.
Center Marie Bertholdt scored 4 second half points and played a very physical game both offensively and defensively by relentlessly crashing the boards and intimidating Berkeley's inside game. Forward Britney Walker contributed a nice basket from mid-range in Alameda's third quarter run.
First year varsity players Allison Takagaki and Ce Ce Nguyen got valuable playing time in a pressure packed game and scored 3 and 2 points respectively. Guard Debbie Gee hit a three point shot in the second quarter to round out the scoring for the feisty Hornets.
The disappointing loss to the Yellow Jackets puts the Hornets firmly in second place in the league. Alameda High is now 4-2 in league play and 12-10 overall. In a recent addition to the game schedule, Alameda will get another chance to play Berkeley as a non-league game on February 11 in what should be another excellent learning opportunity for both the seniors and the young players on the Hornet roster.
